The Rise of the Ultramarines – Part 4

Title: The Unyielding Resolve of the 13th Legion: A Warhammer 40,000 Tale

A rich tapestry of unique talents and temperaments is deeply woven into the genetic fibre of each Legion in the immense universe of Warhammer 40,000. A few of these extraordinary traits are visibly evident, such as the near-supernatural fury of the 9th Legion Blood Angels or the remarkable resilience of the 14th Legion Death Guard. Others, however, are more elusive, subtly ingrained, and only reveal themselves under the weight of the oppressive darkness.

One such Legion is the 8th Legion Night Lords, whose very souls are consumed by a stygian darkness, and yet, this very darkness is their greatest weapon, bringing doom upon their enemies. Then we have the 10th Legion Iron Hands, their icy passion for technology and unyielding resolve a chilling testament to their strength.

Among these formidable Legions, the 13th Legion carved its own unique path. Unveiling a unique blend of aggression and restraint, discipline, and determination, they excelled in Joint Task Force operations and cross-theatre warfare. Their success in independent operations was noteworthy, often assuming direct command of secondary mortal support forces of the Imperialis Auxilia.

The 13th Legion frequently detached cadres of their warriors to serve as provosts and disciplinarians, a task many other Legions considered beneath their honor or an inefficient use of their Astartes. However, the 13th Legion’s adaptability and breadth of operations were their shining armor, often likened to the esteemed 1st Legion Dark Angels and the renowned Lunar Wolves.

Their war tactics were a fascinating blend, influenced by the diverse martial cultures from which they were drawn and the other Legions with whom they served. The knife craft of the Opaki gangs of Hive Core and the armored warfare tactics of the X Legion were notable influences.

By the third solar decade of the Great Crusade, the 13th Legion had begun to develop a distinct identity, known for their practical and direct approach, prioritizing swift engagements over esoteric arts of warfare or conjectural strategizing.

The 13th Legion was unwaveringly loyal to the Imperium’s cause, fiercely guarding their honor. This often led to open rivalries with other Legions, particularly those whose Primarchs had already been found. The 13th Legion began to showcase their achievements, individual companies adding elements to their core Legion livery to commemorate their greatest accomplishments.

Despite their numerous triumphs, the 13th Legion did not desire a formal name, preferring their numerical designation. As their first Lord Commander Gren Vaso once declared, “I am told that once the numeral 13th was taken as an ill omen by the weak-minded and those enslaved by the lies of superstition. But in the Emperor’s service, we shall make it a byword for Redemption and Glory.”

By the year 833R of the 30th Millennium, the 13th Legion had grown to an active force of approximately 33,000 Space Marines, their primary battle group forming the autonomous 12th expeditionary Fleet. Their practical approach to warfare minimized casualties and focused on achieving strategic goals with minimal loss of life. This approach also extended to reducing civilian collateral damage on salvageable human worlds.

Their Gene Seed played a crucial role in this rapid expansion. While the success of this unique Legion is undeniable, their resolve and mastery of warfare would soon face their greatest test yet.
