The Rise of the Ultramarines – Part 6

Title: Shadows of Septus: The 13th Legion’s Most Pivotal Battle

Chapter One: The Fall of the Legion Estates

As dawn broke on the hive city of Septus, the noble Space Marines of the 13th Legion were deep in the throes of battle. Despite escalating losses, their superior close-quarters combat skills relentlessly pushed the frontlines deeper into the hive, capturing tactical objectives one after another. Their foes, a once-stoic bodyguard cadre of the hive city’s nobility, crumbled under the onslaught, their better weaponry proving futile against the relentless determination of the 13th.

Chapter Two: The Xenos Trap

However, as the 13th committed further into the hive, the trap was sprung. Breaking from the fiery corona of Septus’s giant star, a xenos fleet of unidentified origin and type emerged. Comprising five colossal hourglass-shaped vessels with constantly rotating structures, they streaked towards the beleaguered Space Marines with terrifying speed. Recognizing the impending disaster, their commander, Vaso, issued a general retreat, but as his forces scrambled towards their transports, the assault intensified.

Chapter Three: The Assault from Below and Above

Suddenly, the 13th found themselves under attack from all sides. In the labyrinthine corridors of the hive city, mobs of civilians swarmed the Space Marines, not aiming to kill but to overwhelm and pin them under a mass of bodies. Simultaneously, in the vast void above, the two fleets clashed. The xenos vessels, each larger than the gargantuan Seon’s Thunder, lashed out with devastating whips of elemental particles, scorching and burning Imperial warships and annihilating any fighter squadrons that approached.

Chapter Four: The Final Stand

Despite being outmatched, the 12th expeditionary fleet fought valiantly, managing to force one of the massive xenos vessels into retreat. But this victory came at a steep cost. A dozen of their own ships were lost, including the Seon’s Thunder, now a burning wreck tumbling out of control through the line of battle.

Chapter Five: The Arrival of the Osiron Cybrid

It was at this critical moment that eerie figures, glowing with a sickly internal light, began to materialize among the attackers on the surface and directly onto the beleaguered Imperial vessels. Encased in baroque biomechanical suits and composed of glowing mists, these beings, later designated as the Osiron Cybrid, spat ethereal fire and crushed the minds of those who resisted.

Chapter Six: The Aftermath

Vaso’s final command was for the fleet to withdraw, recovering as many of the 13th Legion as possible before he committed his life to lead the rearguard. The most senior surviving commander in orbit, Marius Gage, took command of the Legion. His tactical prowess and swift thinking held off the enemy vessels until every surviving storm bird had departed the planet.

When the losses were tallied, the 13th Legion had suffered over 6,500 Space Marines lost, the largest tally in the legion’s history from a single battle. This loss accounted for approximately a fifth of its fighting strength, including many elite members of the Legion and their Lord Commander Gren Vaso. The fleet had also suffered heavily, losing a quarter of its warships, including its flagship.

Chapter Seven: A Year Later

When the 13th Legion returned to the now quarantined and blockaded Airen Cluster a year later, they found worlds left as wastelands filled with unburied dead or plunged into civil strife and chaos. There was no sign of the enemy xenos forms. Instead, they found evidence of insidious covert psychic domination, manipulation of population fears, and the abduction of populations into the void. The Osiron Cybrid, marked for extermination by the Imperium, had vanished, leaving only destruction in their wake.
