Welcome back to our multi-part series on the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Today, we delve into the complex friendship formed in the midst of interstellar warfare between two of the most intriguing characters in the lore – Callus Typhon and Primarch Mortarion. These two individuals, born on opposite sides of the cosmos, would shape the future of the Warhammer universe in ways that no one could have imagined.
Callus Typhon, an individual who was the result of the union of a human woman and one of the overlords, walked into Mortarion’s life with the simple declaration that he was there to help. Mortarion, the Reaper, was initially sceptical, but as they fought side by side, a bond was forged. It was a bond that would be tested and strained, but never broken.
Together, they faced numerous battles, one extraordinary instance being when Typhon’s unit managed to seize a number of the enemy’s flying machines. These machines held an abundance of food, a precious commodity in the harsh landscapes of Barbarus. Typhon’s generosity in sharing these resources won him some goodwill, but the distrust bred by his dark origins and non-human features never completely faded from the minds of their people.
Typhon’s loyalty to Mortarion was unwavering, despite the distrust of those around him. However, his bloodline was a heavy burden that he carried, knowing that his connection to the overlords would always cast a shadow over his actions.
In the midst of their struggles, Typhon nurtured a secret desire to awaken in Mortarion an appreciation for sorcery. He believed that by harnessing the powers of the overlords they defeated, such as the captured Vulcal, they could liberate Barbarus more swiftly. Mortarion, however, rejected this path, seeing in it a betrayal of his own soul.
Typhon’s determination to uncover the source of the overlord’s power led to a startling revelation from Vulcal. The captured overlord claimed that Typhon already carried the “gift of Nurgle”, a plague god, within his blood. This revelation threw Typhon into a state of turmoil. He could not fathom betraying Mortarion, and yet, he was also intrigued by the potential power that lay within him.
The prophecy of Vulcal, the dreams of a rotting and blooming garden, and the allure of the mechanisms of decay that had fascinated Typhon since childhood, all hinted at a destiny intertwined with the plague father. As he peered into the depths of Vulcal’s twisted eyes, Typhon was left to grapple with the implications of his origins, his loyalty to Mortarion, and the potential power that coursed through his veins.
Stay tuned for the next part of our series where we will continue to delve further into the intriguing relationship between Typhon and Mortarion and the path that destiny has laid out for them.
