Vulkan: Guardian of Humanity – Part 10

Welcome back, fellow lore enthusiasts, to another installment of our multi-part series exploring the profound depths of Warhammer 40,000’s universe. This time, we’re delving into the ingeniously inventive yet unmerciful torments that the Primarch of the Night Lords, Conrad Kurze, inflicted upon Vulkan, the Lord of the Salamanders.

Picture this: Vulkan, the Salamander Primarch, is forced to hold a massive block of stone over the heads of mere mortals. With meticulous precision, Pabo, the inventor of this cruel spectacle, has calculated the weight and duration of Vulkan's burden to the second, ensuring that it's long enough for the humans to register their impending doom and shriek in mortal fear. Despite his immense strength and willingness to sacrifice himself, the anguished screams wound Vulkan's merciful soul. And that's just the beginning.

Next, Conrad Kurze, the twisted Night Haunter, subjects Vulkan to a new level of torment. He starves and dehydrates the Salamander Primarch, then cruelly places him at a feast table laden with tantalizing dishes and drinks. Chained to a chair, Vulkan is tantalizingly close, yet tragically unable to reach the tempting sustenance.

But the cruel theatrics don't stop there. Other mortals, victims of starvation torture, sit at the table. Their hands are severed and replaced with cutlery at the ends of burnt stumps. Although some manage to pick up bits of food, the overly-long cutlery prevents them from satisfying their gnawing hunger.

Recognizing their dire straits, Vulkan urges the mortals to feed each other. But Conrad Kur anticipates this and ensures that his victims are deprived of both sight and hearing, effectively isolating them in their suffering. Vulkan, still shackled to his chair, can do nothing but witness the slow, agonizing death of these humans.

As Vulkan endures these torments, Conrad Kur introduces a new instrument of pain – a battle sarcophagus engineered by Perturabo, the Iron Lord. Covered with spikes and blades both inside and out, Vulkan becomes an unwilling puppet, controlled and manipulated to kill Imperial Army soldiers and Raven Guard veterans.

Conrad Kur's torments extend from the physical to the psychological. He coerces Vulkan into an illusion where he must kill Corvus Corax, the Raven Lord, to gain his freedom. Despite Kur's threats of even more gruesome torture, Vulkan's nobility prevails, and he refuses to strike a fatal blow to his brother.

The climax of this saga comes with the creation of an elaborate labyrinth, defying physical laws and designed to disorient and break Vulkan’s spirit. In the heart of this twisted maze, Kur places the Dawnbringer, Vulkan's warhammer, and two dying Salamander Space Marines. As Vulkan navigates the labyrinth, Kur attacks him from the shadows, adding physical pain to the mental torment.

At his lowest, Vulkan receives a visit from the Emperor himself, who reassures his son and provides him with renewed strength. Vulkan then seizes an opportunity, goading Kur into leading him to the center of the labyrinth where his warhammer resides. Though he finds his sons dead, Vulkan comes to realize that their deaths are just another attempt to provoke him and remains resolute.

As the drama unfolds, Vulkan antagonizes Kur, calling him a frightened child and the weakest Primarch. This emotional blow forces Kur to confront his insecurities and inadvertently allows Vulkan to turn the tables. Thus, the tale ends with the Lord of Drakes standing tall against the monstrous torments of his brother, a testament to his indomitable spirit and resilient character.

Stay tuned, fellow lore enthusiasts, as we continue our journey into the rich and intricate universe of Warhammer 40,000. The saga of the Primarchs is far from over, and there are more thrilling tales to come.
