Why Did Corvus Corax Become a Monster to Fight Monsters – Part 10

Title: The Raven Lord’s Last Stand: A Warhammer 40,000 Tale

In the annals of Warhammer 40,000 lore, one tale stands out for its mix of valour, tragedy, and redemption. It’s the tale of the Raven Lord, Primarch of the Raven Guard, and his heroic efforts to protect the precious geneseed of his legion. In a time when the Raven Guard was under imminent threat, a squad of mutated Raptors emerged as unlikely heroes, averting total disaster.

The initial plan was to rapidly replenish the Raven Guard, but a series of unfortunate events forced the Primarch to abandon this idea. Instead, Korax, the Raven Lord, took a more traditional route, slowly refilling his ranks. This approach did not allow the Raven Guard to make a significant contribution to the defence of the Imperium against the traitors, but it did save the Space Wolves and their severely wounded leader, Leman Russ, during the battle at Yant.

Korax daringly led the evacuation from Yant, aware that the traitor forces led by Abdon vastly outnumbered the loyalist forces. Despite the seemingly impossible odds, Korax was determined to resist the traitorous warriors, using this battle as an opportunity to regain strength and prepare for the impending siege of Terra.

As the siege concluded, the 19th Legion, although depleted, was close in number to what it was before the heresy began. However, this brief moment of respite was shattered when Robut Guilliman demanded the Primarchs divide their Aartis. Korax, after much contemplation, felt compelled to comply.

In a tragic twist, Korax felt the need to atone for his perceived sins. He subjected his mutated sons to the judgement of the Imperium and watched as they were executed one by one. Overwhelmed by guilt, Korax retreated to his chambers in Ravenspire, praying for forgiveness from the ascended Emperor.

His self-imposed exile lasted exactly a year. Then, one day, he left the tower in Deliverance and headed towards the Eye of Terror, vanished from the Imperium, never to be seen again by his brothers or sons.

However, his story didn’t end there. In the Eye of Terror, Korax became a beacon of vengeance, hunting down the architect of the Imperium’s downfall, Lar Aelan, the golden demon prince of chaos. Aelan didn’t expect the wrath of the Raven Lord, and in fear, he fled to his citadel, managing to secure the obsidian doors just in time.

In this realm of chaos, Korax underwent a transformation. He became an unfathomable creature, a whirlwind of blades, living shadows, and a flock of black ravens. His departure from the war-torn Imperium is a mystery, one that is difficult for mortal minds to comprehend.

Korax knew he was created with the aid of chaos, meaning he carried within him a source of corruption that could not be atoned for by any actions. Perhaps, by venturing into the Eye of Terror to slay his traitor brothers or to meet a worthy death, Korax hoped to never again pose a threat to the humanity he so ardently protected.

In the end, the story of Korax, the Raven Lord, is one of duty, sacrifice, and a relentless pursuit of redemption. It is a tale that serves as a testament to his undying loyalty to the Imperium and his unwavering commitment to safeguarding humanity, no matter the cost.
