Title: The Enigmatic Allies of the T’au Empire: An Exploration of Warhammer 40,000 Lore
In the expansive, often unfathomable cosmos of Warhammer 40,000, the T’au Empire’s willingness to incorporate other species into their ideological construct of the ‘Greater Good’ sets them apart. Current knowledge suggests that these other species often play specialized roles within the Empire, roles that are either uncomfortable or impossible for the T’au to perform. This post will delve into the intriguing dynamics of these alien species, their interactions, and their roles within the T’au Empire.
The Kroot, a race of avian-like savages from the planet Pech, are notable for their rapid evolution and capacity to absorb genetic material from consumed flesh. Divided into ‘Kindreds’ led by Shapers, the Kroot guide the evolution of their species by selecting enemies with beneficial genetic traits to be absorbed. However, their dietary indiscretions can sometimes lead to evolutionary dead ends, transforming the lithe, muscular humanoids into massive, gorilla-like Kroot Hulks or Kroot Hounds.
Many Kroot serve as mercenaries, their loyalty bought by whoever pays the most and doesn’t forbid their unique dietary habits. Whole Kindreds have been known to fight on behalf of Imperials, Rebels, Orks, and even Servants of Chaos. Despite their homeworld being located on the Eastern Fringes, Kroot mercenaries can be found across the Galaxy, including among the Eternal races of the Screaming Vortex. These warriors employ characteristic hunting rifles, and some Kindreds even receive pulse rifles and carbines from the T’au.
The Kroot aren’t the only intriguing allies of the T’au Empire. The Vespid, an insect-like race from a gas giant of the same name, supply the T’au Empire with valuable crystals and serve on the battlefield. Their flying squads, armed with Neutron Blasters, can annihilate enemy heavy infantry units with ease. Unlike the Kroot, the Vespid are sincere believers in the Greater Good and are respected members of the Empire.
The Nicassar, powerful psykers living a semi-nomadic lifestyle aboard their ships, were the first species to ally with the T’au Empire. They provide the Empire with reconnaissance and research ships, as well as escort vessels, often crewed by their own species to navigate the vessels through the vast expanses of space.
The T’au Empire’s allies also include the obscure Tyrellian race, with broad shoulders, elongated dog-like heads, and speech that resembles barks and growls. Legends suggest that humanity clashed with these xenos during the Great Crusade, leading to viral bombings on several Tyrellian worlds in the Ghoul Stars.
The Demiurg, a minor xenos race of short, rocky humanoid miners and traders from the Eastern Fringes, are economic allies of the T’au. They have no home planet, choosing instead to live on void ships, trading, mining asteroids, and producing necessary goods on board.
In the midst of the 41st Millennium, the T’au Empire annexed the homeworld of the Gue’vesa, beings resembling formless bubbles with clusters of eyes and several tentacles. Not particularly militaristic, the Gue’vesa did not resist and accepted the Greater Good. They have since served their new masters in war, acting as auxiliary units.
As we delve deeper into the lore of Warhammer 40,000, it becomes increasingly clear that while the T’au Empire may seem harmonious and unified, it is, in fact, a complex tapestry of diverse species, each playing its own unique role. Whether through their rapid evolution, their economic contributions, or their military prowess, each race contributes to the Greater Good in its own distinctive way.
