Argel Tal: From Hero to Horror – Part 1

Title: Argel Tal: The Last Angel of Colchis and His Unforgiving Journey to Immortality

In the grim darkness of the far future, there are no heroes, only warriors. Among these warriors, there are those who do not feign virtue in their actions, nor paint their cruelty with the brush of bravery. One such individual, our protagonist today, is Argel Tal – the Last Angel of Colchis.

Born in the searing sands of a remote village named Singh-Rukh, Argel Tal was but a humble son of a carpenter and a seamstress. His home, a modest hut by the river, held no indication of the fate that would befall their youngest child. ‘The Last Angel’ was the only boy in a family of five children, a name befitting his status as the youngest sibling. As he was chosen to join the Emperor’s Angels, his sisters wept, unable to comprehend the honor bestowed upon their brother. His youngest sister, Lakisha, gifted him a necklace, a memento he wore on his wrist even decades after his ascent to the stars.

Erebus, a chaplain of the 17th Legion, saw the potential in Argel Tal and personally recruited him into the Emperor’s Angels. Argel Tal’s courage and resilience were apparent, traits he suspected were inherited from his mother. He would later think back to their meeting, reflecting on the strength his mother displayed when handing over her son to Erebus.

The 17th Legion’s base was on Colchis itself, allowing the recruits to be deeply embedded in their culture and beliefs. Argel Tal was under the watchful eye of Apothecary Turyon, who oversaw his transformation into an Astartes. Turyon, a kind mentor to Argel Tal, not only monitored his physical changes but also instilled the beliefs that would define many legionnaires.

One of the most significant milestones for Argel Tal was his first encounter with his Primarch, Lorgar. The sight of the Golden Primarch had such an overwhelming effect on the boy that he was plagued with nightmares for a month. Turyon assured him that this was a normal reaction, as the mortal mind was not prepared to behold a divine being like Lorgar. Despite the suffering, Argel Tal was inspired by his Primarch’s image, fuelling his desire to serve and earn the mantle of a Space Marine.

As he matured into an Astartes, Argel Tal held onto a memento of his mentor, Turyon—a curved Xenos knife he used to end Turyon’s life. This keepsake was viewed as a sign of an unhealthy mind by his battle brothers, but Argel Tal was undeterred. It served as a stark reminder of his transformation and the sacrifices he had made to become a Space Marine.

Despite Erebus’ intention to mold Argel Tal into a Chaplain, the warrior himself vehemently refused the role. His battle brothers often commented on his philosophical mind and eloquent speech, traits associated with a Chaplain. However, Argel Tal was steadfast in his refusal, causing a rift between him and Erebus. The details of this conflict remain shrouded in mystery, a chapter in the saga of Argel Tal yet to be unveiled.

Stay tuned to uncover more about the complex journey of Argel Tal, as we delve deeper into the events that shaped this warrior in our multi-part series.
