Blood Angels : Blood for the Golden God – Part 14

The Warhammer 40K universe is a complex tapestry of stories and legends, a saga that spans across time, space and dimensions. Among the many threads that make up this intricate narrative, the tale of Sanguinius and his Blood Angels stands out for its enduring themes of fraternity, betrayal, and the eternal struggle between light and darkness. This tale has been told and retold, each iteration revealing new facets of the story and the characters within it. Today, we delve into a crucial chapter of this epic saga, a tale of the Blood Angels’ first encounter with the true face of Chaos.

Sanguinius, the noble and radiant primarch of the Blood Angels, was united with his brothers in a lifelong quest to repair a genetic flaw that plagued their legion. This flaw, ominously known as “The Flaw,” was a secret that Sanguinius and a select few of his kin held dear. One of the keepers of this secret was Horus, the Warmaster, who swore a solemn vow never to reveal it to anyone, not even to their father, the Emperor. This bond of trust between the brothers was as close as it could be, a bond that would later be exploited by a corrupted Horus in his quest to turn the Blood Angels to the service of the Chaos Gods.

As the story unfolds, Horus, now under the influence of Chaos, manipulates Sanguinius into leading his entire legion to the Signus Cluster, a remote star system on the Eastern Fringe of the galaxy. The Blood Angels’ mission was to liberate the seven worlds and fifteen moons of the Signus Cluster from the xenos invaders known as the Nephilim. This campaign, later known as the Signus Campaign, was presented to Sanguinius as an opportunity to rid the Blood Angels of their genetic flaw.

What awaited the Blood Angels at the Signus Cluster, however, was not salvation, but a demonic trap. The cluster had already fallen to the Ruinous Powers, becoming a realm of Chaos and the dominion of a Greater Daemon of Slaanesh named Kyriss the Perverse. Upon their arrival, the Blood Angels were ambushed by the demonic forces of the Warp.

The ensuing battle saw the Blood Angels facing the true fury of Chaos. Despite their initial shock and the heavy losses they suffered, the Blood Angels rose to the challenge. They launched a counterattack on the daemon stronghold, fighting with a ferocity that belied their noble demeanor. The clash between Sanguinius and the Greater Daemon Kabanda was a spectacle of epic proportions, ending with Sanguinius gravely wounded and rendered unconscious.

With their Primarch fallen, the Blood Angels were overcome by a black rage. In their madness, they tore through the demonic hordes, their thirst for blood and violence unquenchable until every trace of Chaos was eradicated from the planet. This brutal violence awakened a dark thirst within the Space Marines, a thirst that would manifest in the centuries to come as the Black Rage, a curse that would afflict the Blood Angels and their successors.

The Blood Angels emerged victorious from the Signus Campaign, but the price they paid was steep. The lingering shadow of the Black Rage marked their souls, a testament to the terrifying power of Chaos. Despite the adversity, the Blood Angels demonstrated their unwavering resolve, setting course towards Terra, guided by a shining beacon amidst the storm conjured by the Word Bearers.

This tale of the Blood Angels’ encounter with Chaos is one of many that underscore the enduring themes of brotherhood, betrayal, and the struggle against darkness in the Warhammer 40K universe. It serves as a stark reminder of the price of victory and the enduring legacy of Sanguinius and his Blood Angels.
