The saga of the Eye of Terror, a wound in space-time, is a tale as old as time itself, spanning over ten millennia and steeped in the annals of Warhammer 40,000 lore. Filled with pain, suffering, and chaos, the Eye has forever altered not only the lives of humanity but also the dwellers of the Milky Way. This story is part of a multi-part series delving into the mysteries and the horrors of the Eye of Terror. Today, we focus on the tragic tale of the innocent chapters, the eye-opening discovery of an ancient saint’s true nature, and the relentless quest for knowledge, even in the face of madness.
The tale begins in the Moore of chaos, where the survivors of innocent chapters, led by Conak Lan, Master of the Vpal Swords, were dispatched. Their destination was the Elders Palace, the lair of the ancient saint, St. Basil. The shocking revelation that awaited them would shake the very foundation of their beliefs. St. Basil was, in fact, an apostle of chaos. Upon the unearthing of this truth, St. Basil and his thousands of followers were immediately slain. All his books and teachings were set ablaze, and his temples razed to the ground. The shameful truth was hastily concealed and forgotten, leaving the extent of the damage inflicted on the Imperium by these chaos adherents unknown to this day.
The knowledge of the Eye of Terror wasn’t solely gained through such tragedies. Before and after, thousands of brave heroes, whose names history has already forgotten, ventured into the abyss of madness to gather whatever information they could about the stronghold of Humanity’s greatest foe. Their sacrifices bore fragmented yet crucial information, such as the existence of worlds somewhat suitable for life along the relatively calm and stable warp currents.
Among these worlds is Zan 2, a hellforge world deep within the Eye of Terror. It’s a citadel of the Dark Mechanicum, devoted to demon machines and infernal industries. Here, mills grind the flesh of the suffering, bringing the insane visions of their nightmarish masters to reality. The Dark Mechanicum, resembling half-demons, have long since cast aside the last vestiges of their humanity. They conduct their dark researches without regard for even the chaos gods, selling or bartering their unholy inventions and weapons to the highest bidder.
Another intriguing world is Ascendant, a neutral territory within the Eye of Terror. This planet hasn’t pledged allegiance to any faction, making it a hub for negotiations and trade. The markets of Aro technology are bustling with everything from dreams to raw materials. To protect this wealth, Ascendant is fortified with hundreds of heavily armed orbital battle stations, ensuring the ongoing wars among the independent city-states go uninterrupted by external factions.
However, a spark of hope has ignited. The great scientist of the Imperium, Belisarius Cawl, has embarked on a path of research that may ultimately lead to the recreation of the ancient Necron technology of pylons. This could potentially seal the yawning Eye of Terror forever, offering a ghostly chance of peace for the Imperium. The journey is long and filled with uncertainty, but as the saga of the Eye of Terror continues to unfold, the resilience of humanity and its struggle against chaos remains unyielding. The Eye of Terror may be a wound in the galaxy’s body, but it’s also a testament to the Imperium’s unwavering spirit.
