History of Ciaphas Cain – Part 3

Title: The Tumultuous Journey of Cain: A Warhammer 40,000 Tale

In the vast and tumultuous cosmos of Warhammer 40,000, few figures inspire as much awe and controversy as the renowned Commissar Ciaphas Cain. Known as a saviour by some and a pariah by others, he’s a character whose exploits have shaped the destiny of countless worlds. This tale takes us through a few of his most notable adventures, starting with the sphere that had fallen under the corrupt influence of a Genestealer Cult, who sought to incite conflict between the Tau and the Imperium.

The name Amberly Vail is inextricably linked with Cain’s story. It was she, an Inquisitor, who first crossed paths with him amidst the upheaval on this sphere. It was during this campaign that Cain discovered his aid, Jurgen, was a psychic blank. This peculiar trait, initially seen as a curiosity, would later prove instrumental in saving Cain’s life in the face of insurmountable odds.

It was here that the campaign reached its peak, culminating in the slaying of Governor Grace, exposed as a cult adherent through Vail’s relentless investigation. The aftermath saw the retreat of Tau Marshall contingents, marking a significant victory for the Imperium.

Cain’s journey then took him to the icy world of Simia Orarai. Here, he defended an oil refinery against marauding Orks, while unbeknownst to him, a reawakening threat of Necrons lurked beneath the ice. This venture, however, was just a prelude to the civil uprising on Per Runda, orchestrated by Genestealers. With the traitors purged, Cain ventured to Adria in 937.M41, where he played a crucial role in thwarting a Chaos ritual, leading to the downfall of a Daemon Prince.

In 938.M41, the Valhallan 597th was summoned to Lonia, plagued by a mysterious infection that turned the dead into the living. Notably, Jurgen’s wounds healed miraculously, while the infected succumbed. Cain realized that Jurgen’s psychic blankness shielded him from the psychogenic component of the plague. This led to the creation of sanctified vaccines that magnified their potency, a pivotal moment in overcoming the plague.

In the year 942.M41, Cain and the Valhallan 597th found themselves on Nusquam Fundamentibus, an icy world on the fringes of the main thoroughfares. Here, amidst the icy desolation, Cain unveiled the presence of a dormant Tyranid brood. The Hive Mind was obliterated before it could fully awaken, thanks largely to Cain’s valour.

Later, in the midst of the 900s.M41, Cain vacated his regimental commission to serve as a commissar liaison officer upon the staff of Lord General Zean. But peace was short-lived, as in 990.M41, Cain found himself intervening to save Zean from sympathizers of the treacherous Tau in the Deepwater system.

Over eight decades of service, Cain engaged in battles across countless worlds, facing enemies from Genestealers to Tau, Necrons to Tyranids. One of his most notable encounters was an unholy alliance with a Drukhari Succubus as Tyranid horrors descended upon the world. The Succubus sought to ensnare Cain, but underestimated the Commissar’s cunning. He outmanoeuvred her and ended her vile existence in a decisive strike, delivering a blow against the dark forces threatening mankind.
