Some humans concealed this flickering flame deep within their souls, while others wore it proudly, a radiant badge of defiance against the encroaching darkness. Across hundreds of worlds, their armies waged relentless battles against the heresy, the spark of hope manifesting in their courage, their willpower, and for some, their faith in an ancient artifact – the Pharos Beacon.
Nestled within the borders of Ultramar, the young state of Imperium Secundus was a beacon of hope for billions. The Pharos Beacon, an ancient artifact, embodied their aspirations for a brighter future. Its mystical light not only illuminated the path to Macragge but also kindled the spirits of those dwelling in its radiance. Thanks to the beacon, the 500 worlds, torn apart by a deadly storm, could once again reunite. If the capital world was the brain of Imperium Secundus, then Saur, home of the beacon, was its heart.
The beacon’s operation on Saur was akin to the heartbeat of the young state, pumping lifeblood to the worlds of Ultramar, ensuring the continuity of life. Every day, billions of eyes would gaze at the sky, seeking out the single bright point in the blood-red expanse. But this beacon of hope didn’t just attract friends; it also drew the eyes of foes.
Among these foes were the Night Lords, specifically a fragment of the once formidable Legion. After their defeat by Lion El’Johnson, the Night Lords were no longer the fearsome war machine they once were. This detachment, led by Lord Kopter Kresh the Pale, was in a state of disarray. Kresh’s warriors followed him more out of necessity than loyalty, and he knew he needed a significant victory to secure his leadership.
The beacon on Saur, though of paramount importance, was only guarded by the 199th Company under Captain Adal’s command, a small contingent of Imperial Fists, and an irregular Centurion Auxilia. Consequently, Kresh saw the beacon as a perfect target, a victory that could bolster his standing. This decision, however, would later expose the fallacy of Johnson’s belief that a small garrison would attract less attention, thus preserving the planet from invasion.
While Kresh was setting his sights on Saur, the Lord Protector himself was preoccupied, frantically scouring the entire Imperium Secundus for traces of Conrad Kurze. The defenses of Saur were relatively weak, except for an orbital station serving as the Ultramarines main base in this system. Despite the looming threat, the majority of the forces were stationed in orbit, a decision that would soon be put to the test as the Night Lords plotted their assault.
