The Origins of Chaos – Part 1 – The Start

In the grim darkness of Warhammer 40k ‘s future, few words come close to encapsulating the sheer terror, destruction, and despair that the malevolent forces of Chaos bring forth. War, fear, and terror – these are the hallmarks of their existence and the essence of their chaotic nature. For millennia, these horrors have haunted the galaxy, cunningly manipulating its inhabitants and nearly bringing the mighty Imperium of Man, the largest and most formidable nation in the cosmos, to its knees.

It is a daunting task to attempt to define Chaos. The term encapsulates its influence, the Chaos Gods, their zealous followers, and the warp itself – an endless ocean of spiritual and emotional energy that fills the warp. This force, as powerful as it is corrupting, is synonymous with Chaos itself, inseparable in their interplay of destruction and despair.

Despite its tainted nature, the warp’s energy can be harnessed by the most gifted psykers, granting them the ability to transcend the material laws of the universe. But such power is rarely without its price. The malevolent influence of Chaos can gradually corrupt a psyker, twisting his soul and mind to suit its insidious needs.

Understanding Chaos requires a deep dive into the annals of its origins – a journey that begins with the warp. This psychic dimension, referred to as the “Immaterium,” exists parallel to our world, the “Materium.” The warp, according to consensus, has existed as long as our galaxy, albeit in a much different state.

In the era before the 41st Millennium, the warp was a relatively tranquil place, devoid of warp entities or dark Gods. Over time, however, the emotions of various civilizations – born, lived, and died – imprinted upon the warp. Their anger, hatred, envy, and fear filled the warp, taking shape and altering its state. The warp transformed into a chaotic and unpredictable realm, embodying the most powerful emotions of countless sentient beings.

These emotions gave birth to demons and, eventually, the dark Gods – Khorne, Nurgle, and Tzeentch. They are the distilled essence of the emotions of thousands of civilizations, warped to the point of absurdity. These Gods wield unimaginable power within the immaterium, manipulating the warp’s currents to serve their whims.

It wasn’t until the sinful fall of trillions of Aeldari that the fourth and last God of Chaos, Slaanesh, was born. Slaanesh’s awakening was cataclysmic – his first breath, a scream that nearly obliterated the Aeldari civilization and spawned the colossal rift between the Materium and Immaterium known as the Eye of Terror. Thus, Chaos was born.

The Gods of Chaos, despite being shaped by singular emotions, are entities of tremendous power. Yet, their existence hinges on the emotions of mortal beings. These Gods can allocate portions of their power to create demons that reflect their character and abilities.

Despite their division into four Gods, each deity is so mentally vast that they lack a physical embodiment. They exist solely in the warp, commanding a plethora of servants and slaves amongst demons and material races, humans being a notable example.

The birth of Chaos and its first three Gods is believed to be intrinsically linked to the development of humanity. It is suggested that humans, with the darkness in their hearts, are primarily responsible for disrupting the harmony of the warp.

Each of the four Gods is perpetually engaged in a cosmic tug-of-war, their struggles reflected in the battles between their followers in the Material World. These battles augment the power of the victorious God, but the act of conflict itself is the true essence of Chaos.

In the warp, these Gods are locked in a ceaseless power struggle, each striving to dominate the immaterium. This eternal conflict, known as “The Great Game,” underscores their unwillingness to share absolute power.

The warp, as we now know it, was not always the nightmarish hellscape it has become by the 41st Millennium. The first Chaos God to awaken in the warp was Khorne, and his story will be the focus of our next delve into the Essence of Chaos.
