Hail, devotees of Warhammer 40k lore, and welcome back to our multi-part series where we delve deep into the fascinating, complex universe of our beloved game. Today, we are focusing on the indomitable Ultramarines, the Sons of Guilliman, and their pivotal role in the Imperium of Man.
The Ultramarines, originally the 13th Space Marine Legion, are regarded as one of the mightiest and most esteemed Space Marine chapters in the expansive Imperium of Man. Their reputation is well-earned, for it was they who played a crucial role in holding the Imperium together following the cataclysmic Horus Heresy.
These highly disciplined and resilient warriors have adhered steadfastly to the teachings of their Primarch Roboute Guilliman for 10,000 standard years. Their loyalty and discipline have been instrumental in reshaping the Imperium after the Heresy during a period of rebirth and restructuring, known as the Second Founding.
The Ultramarines, under Guilliman’s orders as the Lord Commander of the Imperium and Imperial Regent, have been the primary source of the gene-seed for more Adeptus Astartes chapters than any other First Founding Legion. This is a testament to their strength, resilience, and pivotal role in the Imperium.
Their culture, intriguingly, draws heavy inspiration from the ancient Roman Empire of Old Earth. This influence is evident in their High Gothic names, strict adherence to the Codex Astartes, and the societal structure of their homeworld Macragge. When it comes to recruitment, the Ultramarines follow a rigorous and methodical approach, selecting only the best to join their ranks.
The Ultramarines’ dominion extends to the sub-sector of space in the Segmentum Ultima known as Ultramar. Their Chapter Master not only leads his warriors into battle but also rules Macragge and presides over Ultramar, making the Ultramarines a significant political power within the Imperium.
Esteemed as heroic, virtuous, and noble defenders of humanity, the Ultramarines, clad in their iconic blue armor, epitomize everything the Adeptus Astartes represent to the countless billions of Emperor’s subjects. Their deeds are celebrated and revered across the Emperor’s domains, their heroics immortalized in devotional works throughout the galaxy.
When the vile Tyranid Hive Fleet Behemoth attacked the Eastern Fringe, it was the Ultramarines, led by the indomitable Marneus Calgar, who turned the tide of battle, despite the loss of their entire veteran First Company. Their valiance in the face of such adversity earned them great honor and invaluable experience against the xenos threat.
Even during the dark days of the Horus Heresy, the Ultramarines showed their mettle. Hindered by the massive warp storm known as the Ruinstorm, they fought bravely, attempting to reinforce Terra. Despite their efforts, they were unable to reach in time to intervene in the final battle.
Yet, it was in the aftermath of the Heresy that their Primarch, Roboute Guilliman, truly shone as a beacon of hope. With the Emperor incapacitated and the Imperium on the brink of collapse, Guilliman’s genius and leadership saved countless human worlds from descending into anarchy. His reforms of the Imperial bureaucracy and armed forces ensured the survival of the Imperium in its darkest hour.
Sadly, Guilliman fell at the hands of his traitorous brother, the Daemon Primarch Fulgrim, poisoned during the Battle of Thessala. His barely living body was placed in a stasis field within the Ultramarines’ Fortress Monastery, where it remained for 10,000 years until his miraculous resurrection during the 13th Black Crusade. Resuming his role as the Lord Commander of the Imperium and the Imperial Regent, Guilliman led the defense of mankind against the darkness brought by the birth of the Great Rift at the dawn of the Era Indomitus.
So, followers of the Emperor, let us honor the Ultramarines, the Sons of Guilliman, for their valor, resilience, and unwavering loyalty to the Imperium. For as long as they draw breath, they will stand, they will fight, and they will prevail, for nothing shall stay their wrath.
