The Rise of the Ultramarines – Part 7

Title: An Epic Saga of the 13th Legion and the Rise of Primarch Robut Gillan

In the sweeping expanse of the cosmos, there are countless tales of the Emperor’s relentless crusades, of the unyielding Imperial legions that push back the chains of chaos. Yet, among these many narratives, the tale of the 13th Legion’s blood oath and their Primarch’s extraordinary journey stands tall. This is their story, a saga of remorse, resilience, and rediscovery.

In the aftermath of the campaign to reclaim the Asirus Cluster, the 13th Legion, also known as the Emperor’s Own, found themselves in a somber predicament. The campaign, short and bereft of the glory usually associated with their conquests, resulted in the cluster’s reclamation and its eventual repopulation under Imperial control. But the glory wasn’t what they sought; it was the xenos, against whom they swore a blood oath of vengeance, promising extermination wherever they reappeared.

Under the stewardship of Marius Gage, the newly appointed Lord Commander and Legion Master, the Legion underwent a swift reorganization. They replenished their ranks, gathered supplies, and doubled their efforts in the Great Crusade. Each victory was a testament, a reminder to themselves and the galaxy that their defeat at Septus the Pth was nothing more than a fleeting aberration, never to be repeated. However, a shadow of their fallen master and his battle lingered, an unspoken burden of loss and doubt that gnawed at their confidence.

Their desire to reunite with their Primarch, to restore their sense of wholeness, intensified. But unbeknownst to them, their Primarch had already been located by the Emperor over two Terran years prior. Unfortunately, due to the unpredictable nature of the warp, contact wouldn’t be possible for several more standard years. During this period, they fought relentlessly but joylessly, rapidly conquering world after world for the Great Crusade, shunning both the laurels of victory they once coveted and the respect of their peers they once yearned for.

Then, their salvation finally arrived.

The story of Primarch Robut Gillan, his early life, and his discovery is widely known thanks to the extensive efforts of numerous Imperial iterators. According to Imperial legend, the Emperor of Mankind created the Primarchs with artificially engineered genes, using his own genome as the base, and imbued them with unique superhuman abilities. However, the Ruinous Powers of Chaos had other plans. They scattered the gestation capsules containing the Primarchs throughout the galaxy, with some of the capsules breached, allowing the forces of the Immaterium to wreak havoc on their contents.

One such capsule containing the still-developing Primarch fell upon the world of Mcrag in the Eastern Fringe of the Galaxy. Mcrag, a desolate world part of a long-decayed star empire, was inhabited by a robust human society that had somehow managed to retain its industries and a semblance of cohesion even during the most intense warp storms. It was here that the fallen capsule was discovered by a group of magnates during a hunt. Recognizing it as advanced technology, they broke the seal and found within a strikingly beautiful and perfectly formed human child, glowing with a nimbus of power.

This child was taken to Konor Gillan, one of the two consuls governing Mcrag’s most civilized and powerful region. Konor adopted the infant, a practice not uncommon in their culture, and named him Robut. Little did they know, they were nurturing the future Primarch, the very beacon of hope the 13th Legion yearned for. But that’s a tale for another day…
