Welcome back, fellow lore enthusiasts! Today, in our ongoing exploration of Warhammer 40,000’s vast universe, we delve into the life of a once mortal man turned demon lord, known as Lord Asus. His story begins in the grim, shadowy confines of Nanoom 5, the home world of the Night Lords. Here, amidst a culture steeped in barbarism and gangsterism, a young Asus had no option but to join the infamous Legion.
The Night Lords, led by the brooding and contemplative Primarch, Conrad KY, the Night Haunter, were a force of terror and destruction. They were the nightmarish children of the Imperium, spreading death amongst humanity’s enemies and claiming planets in the name of the Imperium throughout the Aerbus Crusade. They fought with a fervor and loyalty for their genetic sire that was unmatched, mastering his tactics of terror and ceaselessly seeking to learn and improve.
Asus, a sinister figure within the Legion, was no exception. He honed his skills tirelessly, killing and maiming without regard for the ideals and principles held dear by his brothers in the Ultramarines or the Imperial Fists.
During the Great Crusade, many Space Marine Legions won their fame through heroic deeds. The Night Lords, however, had a different approach. Their vision of warfare was one of brutal efficiency, annihilating humanity’s foes swiftly and savagely. The methodical planning of the Imperial Fists and the surgical precision of the Ravenguard held no appeal for them. Instead, they reveled in the madness they could inflict on their enemies with psychological assaults before dealing swift death.
The fates of the Night Lords and their Chapter Master, Aerus, were sealed by their own actions. The atrocities they committed during the Crusade were countless. Where they eradicated foes, countless innocents perished. On the planet Juno4, Aerus led an assault on a Xenophiles Cult, resulting in the execution of half a million people. On Plaga Secundus, he enacted the KN Haunter’s order to annihilate an entire continent with virus bombs.
The barbarity of these actions could not go unnoticed. The Night Lords were condemned, and thus began their descent into the service of Horus. The Heresy marked the beginning of Aerus’s finest hour. As Conrad KY struggled with nightmarish visions of his end, Asus took part in the Civil War and led his company to numerous acts of genocide.
When news of the Warmaster’s death reached Asus, he called upon the full might of Chaos. The gods heard him and answered. By the time the KN Haunter fell at the hands of an Imperial assassin, Asus, blessed with otherworldly power, was already commanding a significant contingent of the Night Lords.
In the millennium following the Horus Heresy, Asus and his pack became a true plague upon the Imperium. He cast down 30 Imperial worlds, initiating raids for his own pleasure and to offer new souls to the indivisible Chaos.
In the year 832 of the 33rd Millennium, Asus committed an abominable act that earned him the highest reward – transformation into a Demon Prince. Descending upon the Hospitala Order’s monastery on Castillia 5, he massacred two million innocent souls. His triumphant roar from the ruins of the monastery marked his ascent into a being of unimaginable power and malevolence.
To this day, Asus remains a grave threat to the Imperium. Despite numerous attempts by the Inquisition to destroy him, each has ended in the death of an experienced Inquisitor, their soul offered as a sacrifice to the undivided Chaos. Stay tuned, as our journey into Warhammer 40,000’s lore continues with the story of Angra Manu, a favored assistant of Corero, in the next installment of this multi-part series.
