Why Are Eldar Aspect Warriors Feared Across the Galaxy? – Part 17

“Journey of the Lost Phoenix Lord: The Shadow Specters Saga”

The annals of Warhammer 40,000 are filled with tales of valor and tragedy, and one of the most compelling narratives is the saga of the Lost Phoenix Lord of the Shadow Specters, Ilth. The Phoenix Lord was once a pupil of Asurmen, the first of the Phoenix Lords. He established the Shrine of the Shadow Specters in the craftworld Mima, a world that would play a pivotal role in his destiny.

The Rune of Fate, an ancient Eldar symbol, twists and turns in the narrative of Ilth’s life, embodying his journey through life, death, and the immortality of Spirit. It is believed that this rune signifies the path to destiny and fecundity, a concept that is deeply imbued in Ilth’s tale.

The legend of Ilth is a heart-rending one. It speaks of a time when Ilth was visited by a vision of Mima’s destruction by entities unknown, during his training with Asurmen. Shaken and determined to prevent the annihilation of his kin, Ilth undertook a perilous journey through the Webway, the great Eldar labyrinth. His quest: to find his craftworld and prepare it for the impending doom.

Known as the Shade of Twilight, he wandered the Webway for years, seeking lost brethren and spreading his teachings to other craftworlds. His journey was fraught with battles against the progeny of Slaanesh, which had infiltrated the labyrinth. Fate led him to a branch of the Webway previously unseen, where he faced a Greater Daemon that had burst forth from the Warp. After a titanic battle, Ilth emerged victorious but fell into a deep slumber, during which the location of Mima was revealed to him.

Upon awakening, Ilth made his way to Mima and began to train its warriors in the arts of war, emphasizing stealth, speed, and the all-conquering firepower. But it was not all about training and preparing. Ilth had a more ominous reason for his presence on Mima.

He revealed to the Council of Seers the impending doom but offered a glimmer of hope: the enemy could be defeated if struck before it became unstoppable. Ilth led almost half of Mima’s warriors through the same portal he had emerged from, knowing that ensuring Mima’s survival would cost them their lives.

The Eldar ships in Mima awaited news of their victory for years, but eventually had to accept that Ilth and his warriors had fallen. The Phoenix Lord had managed to eliminate the threat to Mima but was defeated in a fierce battle in the enemy’s homeland, known in Eldar legends as Bethal.

Ilth, however, did not die. As a Phoenix Lord, he is more than a simple warrior. He is a conglomeration of all his predecessors, their spirit stones adorning his armor and weapon. His spirit remained in a cave in Bethal, waiting for the day he would be found and revived.

With Ilth’s disappearance, his followers and sanctuaries in the craftworlds began to vanish. The Shadow Specters gradually died in battles and their shrines were abandoned, becoming grim, ghostly places shunned by most Eldar.

However, the spirit of the Shadow Specters was not extinguished completely. The discovery of Bethal, known in the Imperium as Betalist 3, offered a chance for Ilth’s return. Bel Anath, a seer of Mima, led the operation to retrieve the spiritual vessel of the Phoenix Lord. The Eldar’s reward for their battle against the encroaching twilight was the rebirth of Ilth, the Phoenix Lord of the Shadow Specters.

The tale of Ilth and the Shadow Specters is a testament to the spirit of the Eldar. The Shining Spears, known for their pure and bright virtue, are the embodiments of true heroes and champions of their race. Their story, much like that of Ilth, is a testament to the fecundity of life, the inevitable dance with death, and the immortal journey of the spirit, as symbolized by the Rune of Fate.
