Why Did Corvus Corax Become a Monster to Fight Monsters – Part 1

Welcome to another thrilling chapter in my multi-part series, “Heroes of the Imperium: The Primarchs”. Today, I’ll bring you the tale of Coris Corx, a loyal son of the Emperor and a defender of humanity who saw danger not just in the enemy, but in himself too. Corx’s story is a gripping tale that underlines the grim reality of Warhammer 40,000 – a reality where even heroes must confront their inner demons to protect mankind.

The journey of Coris Corx began on the barren moon of the planet Kavar, located in the Segmentum Tempestus. The moon, known as Lus, was used as a prison and a resource for strategically important minerals. Its first settlers were those enslaved for crimes committed on Kavar, and soon, those who dared to rebel against the oppressive Tech Guilds were added to their ranks.

Over centuries, the elite of Kavar exploited the planet’s resources and its people, turning the once vibrant world into a wasteland populated by starving masses. Rebellion was a pipe dream for the oppressed, as the all-knowing Tech Guilds snuffed out any signs of dissent, sending the instigators to Lus to face an even harsher existence.

Life on Lus was brutal. Prisoners were forced to work in monstrous conditions, often leading to their untimely deaths. The ruling elite of Kavar found new lows in their cruelty, sending children on suicide missions to mine precious minerals from rapidly flooding caves. All of this was overseen by the wardens, who took sadistic pleasure in their power over the prisoners, beating and tormenting them without reason.

Into this harsh world, a capsule carrying young Coris Corx crashed, landing in one of the glacial caves. Unlike other Primarchs, Corx was not an infant but a child bearing knowledge that he couldn’t explain. He understood gravity, knew chemical elements, and spoke over 7,000 languages, dialects, and slangs from every corner of the old Empire. Yet, he couldn’t remember his past, only the argument of four mad voices, a memory that left a sense of disgust and distrust in him.

Soon after his awakening, Corx encountered humans for the first time. As laser drills broke into his cave, he saw a group of workers, their faces covered in stone dust, bearing the marks of hard labor and hunger. Among them was a cruel guard, an oppressor who took pleasure in tormenting the weak.

The guard’s cruelty was put to a halt by the young Primarch when he attacked a little girl out of curiosity. In an act of bravery that would define his future, Corx stepped forward and broke the guard’s arm, marking the beginning of his journey as a defender of humanity.
