Salamanders Warhammer 40K – Part 7 (Part 7 of 9)

The Salamanders: Masters of Flame and Steel

Unyielding Warriors

The Salamanders are a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield, exceling in close combat and wielding flame and melta weapons with precision. Their methodical advances, backed by massed heavy armor and fire-wielding heavy infantry, leave enemies scorched and devastated. These Space Marines are patient and calculating, waiting for the perfect moment to unleash their fiery wrath.

Organization and Leadership

When Vulkan, the legendary leader of the Salamanders, assumed command during the Great Crusade, he reorganized the Legion into seven “Realms,” each linked to a city-settlement on Nocturne. This restructuring preserved the autonomy and self-sufficiency of the component units while unifying them under a single purpose. Each Realm was led by a Lord Commander, who protected their settlement and governed the planet’s recruitment efforts.

The Companies of the Salamanders

The Chapter is divided into seven companies, each tied to a city-settlement on Nocturne. The 1st Company, known as the Firedrakes, is an elite group of warriors who embody the Chapter’s values. To join their ranks, one must be an experienced warrior and a paragon of the Salamanders’ ideals. The Firedrakes maintain a large number of Terminator Squads, Sternguard Veterans, and Venerable Dreadnoughts, making them a formidable force on the battlefield.

Unique Traditions and Deviations

The Salamanders deviate from the Codex Astartes in several ways. Instead of ten companies, they maintain the seven warrior houses of the original Legion. Each great settlement of Nocturne forms the basis of one of the companies. The Chapter Master directly oversees the 1st Company, and the Pantheon Council forges the direction of the Chapter. Additionally, the Salamanders maintain three Masters of the Forge, allowing for the efficient creation and maintenance of technological artifacts.

Chapter Disposition

The Salamanders’ chapter disposition before the liberation of the Largos System in M42 shows a severely understrength force, with only 840 company squad-level marines. The 1st Company, led by the Chapter Master, acts as the captain of the company. The other six companies are led by captains, each with their own unique role and responsibilities.

Honour Guard and Veteran Squads

The Honour Guard, led by the Chapter Master, is a prestigious unit that serves as the Chapter’s ceremonial body. The Veteran Squads, led by captains, are composed of experienced warriors who have proven themselves in battle. These squads are valued for their leadership and tactical advice, as well as their destructive power on the battlefield.
