The Birth of the Space Wolves
In the early days of the Great Crusade, the VI Legion, later known as the Space Wolves, was a mysterious and feared force. Comprised of savage and hyper-violent tribesmen from Terra, they were among the “Trefoil” Legions, elite groups given unique Gene-Seed by the Emperor for unknown purposes. Alongside the Salamanders and Alpha Legion, the Space Wolves were held back from most battles, deliberately isolated from their peers.
Unleashing the Rout
A decade into the Great Crusade, the VI Legion was finally unleashed onto the galaxy. Their first major battle saw 3,500 Legionaries assault the world of Delsvaan, led by Master Enoch Rathvin. This vicious shock assault earned the Space Wolves a reputation for brutal tactics, solidified by the massacre at Masaanore-Core. However, their lack of discipline and extreme aggression led to the institution of a large Disciplinary Corps.
The Wolf-King Emerges
Leman Russ, the Primarch of the Space Wolves, was discovered on the planet Fenris. Raised by tribesmen and later by King Thengir’s court, Russ grew into a legendary leader. After a one-on-one battle with the Emperor, Russ was confirmed as one of the Emperor’s Generals and given leadership of the Space Marine Legion bearing his genes. Under his direction, the Space Wolves won many victories during the Great Crusade.
Trials and Triumphs
The Space Wolves faced significant challenges, including the loss of a third of their Legion during the Wheel of Fire Campaign. However, they also made significant discoveries, such as the STC for a new tank design, which was named in honor of Leman Russ. Throughout the Great Crusade, the Space Wolves cemented their reputation as the Emperor’s agents of fear and retribution, becoming known as “The Rout.”
A Legacy of Ferocity
The Space Wolves’ ferocity and tenacity earned them a reputation as one of the most feared Legions in the Imperium. Their unwavering loyalty to the Emperor and unrelenting pursuit of victory forged a legacy that would endure for millennia to come. As the Great Crusade raged on, the Space Wolves continued to leave their mark on the galaxy, shaping the course of history through their unyielding ferocity.
