Tanith: A Lost World of the Imperium
Located in the Sabbat Worlds cluster of Segmentum Pacificus, Tanith was a Forest World of unparalleled beauty and significance. The homeworld of the renowned Tanith First and Only regiment of the Astra Militarum, Tanith played a crucial role in the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. Despite its importance, Tanith was destroyed by the forces of Chaos, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and sacrifice.
The Fall of Tanith
Prior to its destruction, Tanith had an impeccable record of supplying its Imperial Tithe. However, rumors suggested that the planet’s proximity to the Edge of the Imperium made it vulnerable to Chaos influences. Research indicates that the initial settlers of Tanith belonged to the Magmeta gene-stock branch, which originated from the Terran regions of Albia and Europa.
A History of Conflict
Tanith was once a Feudal World ruled by the Huhlhwch Dynasty. However, the dynasty was overthrown by a sect of wood-warriors known as the Nalsheen, who ushered in a new era of democracy and freedom. The planet’s ancient legends attribute this revolution to the Nalsheen’s bravery and martial prowess.
The Destruction of Tanith
On his deathbed, Warmaster Slaydo appointed Ibram Gaunt as Colonel-Commissar and tasked him with raising three regiments for the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. Gaunt arrived on Tanith, only to find the planet under attack by a splinter fleet of Chaos. Despite valiant efforts, Tanith was conquered and destroyed, leaving behind only a handful of survivors.
Geography and Climate
Tanith was a heavily forested world, famous for its nalwood trees. The planet’s unique ecosystem was characterized by the migration of entire forests in search of sunlight and water. This phenomenon made blazing trails through the forests useless, as any paths were erased by the movement of the trees.
Native Wildlife
Tanith was home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including the majestic nalwood trees, shoggy amphibians, and larisel rodents. The planet’s unique ecosystem was largely destroyed during the Chaos invasion, leaving behind only a few scattered remnants.
Culture and Society
Tanith’s people were pale-skinned and dark-haired, with a distinctive lilting accent. They were known for their intricate tattoos, which held significant cultural and symbolic meaning. The Tanith people believed in various spirits, including the drud-fellad and nyrsis, and practiced a unique form of martial art known as cwlwhl.
Language
The Tanith language was a variant of proto-Gothic, used by the Nalsheen as their private tongue. The main Tanith curse-word was “feth,” the name of an ancient Tanith tree-god. The Tanith accent was characterized by a sing-song quality, which was both distinctive and memorable.
Legacy
Despite its destruction, Tanith’s legacy lives on through the bravery and sacrifice of its people. The Tanith First and Only regiment remains one of the most renowned units in the Astra Militarum, and their heroism will never be forgotten.
