The Traitorous Legacy of the Fallen
Ten thousand years ago, a catastrophic event shook the Dark Angels Space Marine Legion, resulting in the defection of a group of renegade Space Marines known as the Fallen. Scattered across space and time by a Warp Storm, these traitors have been the secret enemy of the Unforgiven, a group comprising the modern Dark Angels Chapter and its successors.
A Legacy of Betrayal
The seeds of the Fallen’s treachery were sown during the Great Crusade. A fateful event occurred when enemy forces infiltrated the Invincible Reason, flagship of Lion El’Jonson, Primarch of the Dark Angels, with a nuclear warhead. Luther, second-in-command of the Legion, discovered the plot but hesitated to act due to his growing jealousy of the Lion. Although he ultimately saved the Lion’s life, his hesitation was not forgotten.
A Rift Forms
As the Horus Heresy raged on, Luther and his forces were increasingly left to deal with the rebellion on Caliban, feeling abandoned and bitter. The Warp-taint plaguing Caliban became apparent, and Luther’s followers became convinced that the Emperor would destroy the planet when this became known. Believing that the Lion had knowingly exiled them as a death sentence, the seeds of heresy took root.
Descent into Chaos
The Fallen’s treachery deepened when an expedition led by loyal Dark Angels Chapter Master Belath arrived on Caliban. Astelan and Zahariel, two prominent leaders among the Fallen, orchestrated a purge against those loyal to the Lion, including Belath himself. This marked the beginning of the Fallen’s descent into chaos and their eventual scattering across the galaxy.
Fates of the Fallen
Today, many of the Fallen have become Chaos Space Marines, pirates, or renegade warlords. Others have regretted their heresy and live in peaceful seclusion, while some have even gone on to serve the Imperium. Despite their varied fates, the Fallen remain a potent reminder of the dangers of heresy and the devastating consequences of betrayal.
