The Fallen Warhammer 40K – Part 4 (Part 4 of 4)

Uncovering the Truth Behind the Fallen Angels

In the depths of the Rock, Interrogator-Chaplain Uzziel attempted to extract a confession from a captured Fallen Angel. The Fallen decried Uzziel’s efforts, claiming that Lion El’Jonson and the Emperor had abandoned them on Caliban during the Great Crusade. However, Uzziel soon discovered that the Fallen’s repentance was false, leading him on a wild goose chase to recover the Lion Sword, which turned out to be the Sword of Luther instead.

A Different Perspective

This account is corroborated by another record of a Fallen Angel named Cephesus. When interrogated by Interrogator-Chaplain Bareus, Cephesus claimed that the Dark Angels on Caliban were abandoned by Lion El’Jonson, who took all the glory for himself. Although Bareus was mortally wounded by Cephesus, the Fallen was eventually slain by Brother Kaelan, who received a field promotion to Interrogator-Chaplain.

The Testimony of Astelan

A record of the motivations behind the actions of the Fallen Angels exists in the form of Astelan’s confession. Astelan, a former Chapter Master of the Dark Angels, claimed that he ordered the attack on Lion El’Jonson’s fleet because he believed the Lion had fallen under the sway of Chaos. Astelan also stated that Luther never succumbed to Chaos, but was driven by his duty to the Emperor, fearing El’Jonson’s traitorous nature.

The Divide Within the Dark Angels

Astelan revealed that the majority of the men garrisoned on Caliban were original members of the Dark Angels, Terrans who had been inducted before El’Jonson’s arrival as Primarch. This existing divide may have contributed to the conflict on Caliban. Astelan also claimed that Luther attempted to negotiate with the Lion before the battle, but the Lion refused to talk, leading to the bombardment of Caliban and the ensuing conflict.

The Risen

In M42, Lion El’Jonson returned to defend the Imperium once more, starting with the recruitment of willing Fallen Angels deemed loyal and pure from the taint of Chaos. These new warriors are known as The Risen.
