The Tragic Tale of the Thousand Sons
In the distant reaches of the galaxy, a legendary Space Marine Legion once thrived, only to succumb to the corrupting influence of Chaos. The Thousand Sons, also known as the XV Legion, were born from the gene-seed of their Primarch, Magnus the Red. Their story is one of tragedy, hubris, and the unyielding pursuit of knowledge.
Early Years: The Great Crusade
The Thousand Sons were formed on Terra, during a brief resurgence of warp-storms within the Sol system. This tumultuous event was said to have generated psychic flashpoints across the globe, resulting in outbreaks of madness and violence. Despite these ominous beginnings, the Legion was forged, with Ahzek Ahriman and his twin brother, Ohrmuzd, among the first student-aspirants. The Emperor himself oversaw the selection process, seeking compatible families to host the Legion XV gene-seed.
Combat Disposition and Record
As part of the Great Crusade, the Thousand Sons were deployed to quell pockets of resistance on Terra before being sent into the galaxy. Their name originated from the initial creation of exactly one thousand Marines, who were trained and equipped before the Legion was brought up to full strength. This fact would later become a haunting echo, as the Thousand Sons would repeatedly find themselves reduced to mere shadows of their former selves.
The Horus Heresy
During the Horus Heresy, the Thousand Sons turned traitor, succumbing to the corrupting influence of Chaos. They relocated to Sortiarius, the Planet of Sorcerers, within the Eye of Terror, where they dedicated themselves to the Chaos God of change, sorcery, and magic, Tzeentch. Initially, it seemed that Tzeentch protected the Thousand Sons from the fragmentation and corruption that plagued other Traitor Legions. However, this protection came at a terrible cost.
The Rubric of Ahriman
As the Thousand Sons underwent a crisis of mutation and de-evolution, their chief sorcerer, Ahzek Ahriman, attempted to halt the corruption with a powerful spell. While the spell succeeded in rendering the Thousand Sons immune to Chaos, it had an unforeseen consequence: transforming them into little more than mystically animated suits of armor, barely sentient and devoid of their former humanity. The only surviving members were those with incredibly strong heretical psychic powers, leaving the Thousand Sons a legion of ghosts led by the damned.
Legacy of the Thousand Sons
Today, the Thousand Sons are a shadow of their former selves, a testament to the dangers of unchecked ambition and the corrupting influence of Chaos. Their legacy serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us of the devastating consequences of delving too deep into the mysteries of the universe.
