In this part of our multi-part series, we’re exploring the fascinating narrative of Erebus, the first Chaplain of the Word Bearers Legion and arguably the wisest and most knowledgeable of his brothers. The following tale is one that has been whispered through the ages, a story of intrigue and power, of loyalty and betrayal, and the birth of a villain in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
For years, the first Chaplain had been patiently waiting for the moment to rise, for the opportunity to wield the power that lay dormant within the ancient beliefs and secret covenants. The time had finally arrived when the Primarch Lorgar, absorbed in his search for the true gods, yielded control of the Word Bearers to Erebus and Kor Phaeron.
The legion, under the astute leadership of Erebus, demonstrated an efficiency that was nothing short of incredible, effectively masking the Primarch’s temporary absence and his focus on forbidden pursuits. Decades later, upon Lorgar’s return from the warp, Erebus led purges within the ranks of the Word Bearers, eliminating anyone who seemed inadequately loyal. It was a time of great upheaval, with tens of thousands of Space Marines perishing under his ruthless rule. Yet, the legion grew, becoming one of the most numerous.
Erebus was trusted implicitly by the Primarch, allowed the freedom to act independently, a testament to his outstanding abilities. Lorgar’s famous book is even believed to contain the words of Erebus, further cementing his influence and power within the legion.
Today, Erebus is recognized as a villain, a figure of no sympathy, his deeds echoing through the annals of time. It is remarkable how his contemporaries, blinded by intrigues, were deceived by his charm and charisma. During the final stages of the Great Crusade, Erebus had the uncanny ability to win the trust of everyone he needed.
A few weeks before the encounter with the Interex, Erebus found himself on the flagship of the 16th Legion, the Luna Wolves. With his charismatic persona, pleasant voice, and impressive list of combat achievements, he quickly won over the Luna Wolves, including the Mournival. Never one to send his warriors into battle without leading them personally, Erebus’ constant composure, immense patience, and valor were respected and admired.
Despite his high rank, Erebus never displayed arrogance towards the members of the Mournival, showing respect for the customs of the Luna Wolves, sharing meals with them, drinking after shifts, and even practicing martial skills. During one such training session, Erebus held his own against Lucius, the finest swordsman of The Emperor’s Children Legion. Even when exhausted, Erebus proved to be a worthy opponent, his every strike a result of careful calculation.
However, Erebus’ charisma and prowess were merely the surface of a much deeper, more complex character. His true nature came to light when he provoked a war by stealing a sword created by the ancient masters of the Kenra species from the Interex weapon hall. This sword, crafted using ancient technology that humanity could not replicate, was bound to fulfill a deadly purpose. It was Erebus who first led Horus to question the model of the universe proposed by the Emperor, setting in motion a series of events that would forever change the course of Warhammer 40,000 history.
Stay tuned for our next installment where we delve deeper into the story of Erebus and the pivotal role he played in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
