In this thrilling installment of our multi-part series, we delve into the complex and enigmatic Alpha Legion during the tumultuous years of the Horus Heresy. Splitting their Legion to fight on opposing sides, the infamous Twins Alpharius and Omegon might have been using this tactic to outmaneuver fate, or perhaps personal motives spurred their actions. Raised under varying circumstances, it’s plausible that their perspectives on the unfolding situation diverged significantly.
Before the Heresy unfurled its dark wings, the Alpha Legion was scattered across the galaxy, engaged in minor missions and amassing power. Whether or not these actions were coordinated or if the 20th Legion maintained its previous level of coordination is unknown. These unanswered questions lend credibility to the idea that Alpharius and Omegon likely chose different sides in the civil war, unless this was a component of their joint strategy.
The Alpha Legion, backing Horus, played a crucial role in the battles on Isstvan V, aiding significantly in the extermination of the Emperor-loyal forces. Following their victorious siege, agents of Alpharius journeyed to Deliverance, homeland of Corvus Corax, with a sinister objective: impede the replenishment of the Raven Guard. To fulfill their mission, the Legionnaires went to the lengths of surgically altering their appearances to mimic fallen Raven Guard soldiers from Isstvan V.
Unearthing classified information about secret geneseed vaults, a secret shared only between Korax and the Emperor himself, the agents of Alpharius incited rebellion on Kiavahr. The Alpha Legion succeeded in desecrating the genetic material of the Raven Guard, leading to the birth of monstrous mutants. While the Raven Guard managed to quell the rebellion and eliminate the infiltrators, Alpharius’ main objective was accomplished. Corax was left without the ability to replenish his legion’s ranks.
After the operation, Alpharius was forced to share the stolen genetic data with Fabius Bile, the chief apothecary of the Emperor’s Children. However, he ensured the information was virtually useless. Alpharius retained a sample of the Raven Guard’s geneseed and a copy of the damaged genome, suggesting plans to boost his own Legion and elevate it above the others.
Meanwhile, Omegon met representatives of the XX Legion, declaring that they would operate independently, refusing external interference or control. Following this, the 20th Legion was ordered by Horus to block the White Scars in the Chondax system and prevent them from joining the Loyalists on Terra. Yet again, the twins chose to act on their own terms, their motives known only to themselves.
The Chondax system was severed from the rest of the galaxy due to a Xenos construction similar to Necron pylons, leaving Jaghatai Khan, the White Scars’ Primarch, oblivious to the brewing civil war. However, Alpharius and Omegon dispatched a detachment to destroy the structure, restoring communication and revealing Horus’ betrayal to Khan.
Khan ordered his troops to evacuate Chondax, only to encounter a massive fleet of the Alpha Legion, who ignored their hails and silently amassed their forces. The twins’ fleet remained motionless and silent until the White Scars attempted a warp jump, leading to a skirmish that left the Alpha Legion with significant losses while the White Scars escaped unscathed.
The twins’ motives during this mission remain an enigma. Perhaps they failed to convert the White Scars to Horus’ side, or maybe they deliberately provoked the White Scars, maintaining their loyalty to the Emperor. Regardless, their actions during this period have left us with more questions than answers, and we eagerly anticipate the next chapter in their story.
