In this next installment of our Warhammer 40,000 series, we delve into a tale of two Primarchs – Perturabo and Rogal Dorn – whose stories serve as a stark contrast in the realm of the Imperium. These two brothers, each formidable in their ways, demonstrate the complexities of power, loyalty, and the stark brutality of war.
On one side, we have Perturabo, a primarch whose silence concealed a cauldron of grievances and hatred. These feelings took form in his ruthless decimation of the Legion, and the brutal subjugation of worlds unfortunate enough to fall under the iron grip of the Iron Warriors. Inhabitants of these worlds found themselves under a reign of terror, as the Imperium’s arrival brought not salvation, but subjugation.
Conversely, we find Rogal Dorn, a primarch whose restraint and straightforward nature belied a deep-seated humanity and dedication to ideals. This led the Imperial Fists to not only conquer worlds but to improve them, remaining until stable governance was established. Both were incredibly stubborn, their facades of indifference concealing their true feelings. This mutual inflexibility guaranteed a deadlock in any dispute, with compromise being an impossibility.
Rogal Dorn, in a rare candid moment, acknowledged that his rivalry with his brother was one of his few weaknesses. The contrast between them was stark – Perturabo waged war ruthlessly, believing that even the most horrendous losses were acceptable in pursuit of his goals. Dorn, faced with such a choice, would unhesitatingly make any sacrifice in the name of their father’s ideals, but he did not condone thoughtless losses. These disparate and contradictory strengths played a key role in the Great Crusade’s conquest of the Galaxy.
The Triumph of Anor and the subsequent appointment of Horus as warmaster stirred a pot of emotions amongst the primarchs. Rogal Dorn accepted his brother’s Ascension calmly, reflecting his unwavering faith in the Emperor’s decisions. His support invigorated Horus, who saw Rogal Dorn as a wise and more experienced brother. Indeed, under Dorn’s leadership, the Imperial Fists demonstrated an efficiency second only to the 16th Legion.
Beyond the battlefield, Dorn’s skills in siege and defensive strategies were unparalleled. So much so, that Horus publicly admitted his inability to breach a fortress defended by his brother, humorously suggesting that such a war would last an eternity.
Dorn’s expertise was showcased in the transformation of the palace on Terra. The result surpassed all expectations, with the palace becoming the largest structure in the Galaxy built by human hands. The foundation pillars sank into Terra’s mantle for tens of kilometers, while the high towers reached beyond the atmosphere. But the palace was more than just a marvel of architecture – through Rogal Dorn’s efforts, it became a bastion of fortifications encompassing the entire continent.
However, the Imperial Fists’ grand work was interrupted by the events of the Horus Heresy. The fleet of the Imperial Fists encountered Nathaniel Garro’s frigate, the Eisenstein, fleeing from the tragedy of Isstvan III. Initially skeptical of Garro’s claims, Dorn eventually recognized the horrific truth. Displaying his resilience and loyalty to the Emperor, he immediately dispatched the majority of his forces.
This tale of two primarchs is a fascinating exploration of Warhammer 40,000’s complex lore, showcasing the intricate dynamics of power, loyalty, and war in the far future. As we continue this series, we will delve deeper into these characters and their roles in shaping the Galaxy. So, stay tuned for more thrilling tales from the Warhammer universe!
