The Tyranid Hive Fleets: Explained – Part 6

Greetings, fellow seekers of truth in the grim darkness of the far future! Allow me to take you on a journey through time and space, as we delve into the tumultuous history of the galaxy in the 39th and 41st millenniums. Today, we’ll focus on the alien races and the relentless conflicts they brought upon the bountiful Imperium of Man.

In the dawn of the 39th Millennium, the Imperium declared the alien invaders, xenos horribilis. This declaration sparked the blood-soaked 50-year-long Zorra Atilla Wars. The entire alien race threw itself against humanity with a ferocity that revealed their true murderous nature. The last known Colossus vessel, a symbol of this xenos horribilis, was obliterated in 226.M39 above the world of Zorra. Its destruction rendered the northern hemisphere of Zorra uninhabitable for millennia, a chilling testament to the horrors of xenos invasions.

The Adeptus Mechanicus, in their tireless search for knowledge, began to uncover the grim truth only in the 41st Millennium. However, the inconsistent records led to a scholarly debate: was Colossus wiped out during the Zorra Atilla Wars, or during the later Helan Crusade? The answer remains elusive.

The 41st millennium bore witness to further xenos invasions, most notably by the terrifying Hive Fleet Colossus. The Imperial world of Thcs fell prey to this relentless invasion. Despite the valiant efforts of Imperial forces, they were unable to halt the onslaught of the xenos invaders. A chilling order was issued from the Imperial High Command: all forces were to withdraw, leaving the settlers of Thcs to their grim fate.

However, in the heart of this despair, a beacon of hope emerged in the form of Wolf Lord Bran Redmaw of the Space Wolves. Refusing the Imperial High Command’s order, Redmaw sent two squads of Grey Hunters to reinforce the Spaceport of Monberg. Their heroic efforts provided the settlers a chance to evacuate, teaching them anti-Tyranid tactics and holding the line against the raging Colossus forces.

Only six Grey Hunters survived this ordeal. Stripped of all honors by the Imperial High Command, they were instead promoted into Redmaw’s personal Wolf Guard, a testament to their defiance and valor in the face of overwhelming odds.

The Eastern Fringe of the galaxy was not spared either. The Hive Fleet Naga, a relatively small but no less destructive Hive Fleet, wreaked havoc and devoured several Assani worlds in 801.M41. The Elari termed this Hive Fleet as Shy, the endlessly winding serpent. It took the combined efforts of Assani fleets from Idhari, Yandan, and Milan craftworlds to destroy Naga. However, the Tyranid Hive Mind absorbed several new biomass samples, gaining crucial knowledge of Elari military strategies and capabilities.

The Jericho Reach region of the Ultima Segmentum also fell prey to the Tyranid invasion with the arrival of Hive Fleet Dean, a splinter fleet of Hive Fleet Behemoth. The shadow in the warp cast by the Tyranid Hive Mind heralded the arrival of this new and terrible Hive Fleet in 812.M41, disrupting communication and isolating regions of the Aculus Crusade.

The Tau Empire had its first horrific encounter with the Tyranids when the Hive Fleet Gorgon invaded their space in 899.M41. The combined efforts of the Tau Fire Caste and the Imperial Guard managed to destroy Gorgon, leaving behind the ‘Zone of Silence,’ regions left barren by the Hive Fleet’s rampage.

As we continue our journey through the annals of the 41st Millennium, we’ll encounter more alien threats, including Hive Fleet Kronos, known for its powerful psychic connection to the Hive Mind and its suffocating shadow in the warp. So stay tuned, fellow seekers of truth, as we continue to peel back the layers of history in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
