Heraldic Beasts and Demonic Steeds: A Dive into the Menagerie of Khorne
Welcome back, fellow lore enthusiasts, to our multi-part series delving into the grim and dark realities of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Today, we’ll be taking a blood-soaked journey into the heart of the Blood God’s throne room to explore the terrifying beasts that serve Khorne, the Lord of Battles.
The Flesh Hounds of Khorne, a pack of demonic hounds, are renowned for their ornate brass collars – the collars of Khorne. These are no simple adornments but talismans of protection, forged in the molten rage of Khorne himself. These collars are anathema to psychic abilities, rendering such attacks useless and allowing the trailing forces of bloodletters to shatter their enemies with relative ease. The mere sight of this nightmarish combination of demonic hounds and merciless fiends is enough to send entire regiments fleeing in terror. This triggers an irrevocable lust for destruction within the flesh hounds who are all too willing to please their Blood God with the skulls and blood of the fleeing cowards.
Just as terrifying are the Juggernauts, also known as brass behemoths or Khorne’s Unstoppable Rage. Made of living metal and with blood as molten as lava, these quadrapedal demonic creatures are a fearsome sight on any battlefield. Each begins its life in the infernal furnaces at the foot of Khorne’s throne, where brass armour, metal cogs, and other components are fused with demonic flesh, sinew, and bone dredged from blood lakes and rivers. The result is a terrifying blend of demon and hell-forged machine, a hulking, bull-like beast that roars with Khorne’s fury.
Once released upon the battlefield, a Juggernaut charges headlong into its enemies, its footfalls rivaling a Warhound Titan’s. Often, these creatures seek out the most imposing foes, hoping to please their master with a display of brute force. Bloodletters, the demonic foot soldiers of Khorne, are often mounted atop these Juggernauts, creating a fearsome cavalry known as Blood Crushers. True to their name, they charge into the thickest part of the battle, scattering foes and pulverizing those too slow to dodge their onslaught.
In rare cases, a mortal champion of chaos who has proven their worth in countless battles may receive a Juggernaut as a gift from their patron god. The reward, however, comes with a heavy burden. Where once the mere killing of a small regiment might have pleased Khorne, the champion now must wipe out entire battalions from his elevated position atop the brass behemoth. Nonetheless, these champions are eager to prove their worth and continue the endless cycle of bloodshed in Khorne’s name.
A Blood Crusher, one of the shock cavalry members of Khorne’s demonic blood legions, is a terrifying blend of bloodletter rider and Juggernaut steed. These demonic mounts are massive creatures whose flesh is brass, sinews are iron, and blood is fire. Their breath is fear, and each step they take is like thunder. They are the embodiment of their creator’s aggression – an unstoppable force of mindless violence.
In the next part of our series, we’ll delve into the lore of the Herald of Khorne. Until then, keep your chainswords sharp and your bolters loaded. For the Blood God!
