Origins of the Warhammer 40k Universe: War, Power, and Religion – Part 9

The Grimdark Reality of Warhammer 40,000: The Demons and the Aliens

Welcome back, fellow adepts of the lore, to our multi-part deep dive into the foreboding universe of Warhammer 40,000, where the grim darkness of the far future is our playground. Today, we journey into the heart of heresy and alien incursions, where the fate of entire worlds can hinge on the utterance of forbidden chants or the scrawl of malevolent symbols.

In this vast, sprawling Imperium, the Imperial Inquisition leads the charge against deviation from the sanctity of the Ecclesiarchy. But, unlike their real-world counterparts, these inquisitors are more than just religious enforcers. They are investigators, interrogators, scouts, counter-intelligence agents, saboteurs, and judges, their power unhindered by the constraints of a secular court. They stand unopposed, even by the mightiest of kings. Their uniform may share superficial similarities with their historical namesakes, but make no mistake; this is a wholly unique entity bred for the relentless fight against heresy.

Yet, the human-centric focus of the Imperium often overshadows the other intelligent life forms that inhabit the galaxy. It’s an unfortunate truth that humanity is not alone in the cosmos, and our fellow galactic inhabitants are far from friendly. But, as we weave through this grim narrative, remember this: to the servants of the Emperor, the alien deserves only contempt.

Inquisitor Chac once said that out of all the intelligent beings waging war against humanity, the Orks always come to mind first. These green savages, hailing from the unfathomable depths of space, are the most populous race in the galaxy. They lurk in every nook and cranny of the Imperium, presenting a constant, lurking threat. But, don’t be fooled by their seemingly aimless tribal skirmishes. Once the dust settles and the strongest, greenest Ork ascends to leadership, the stage is set for a cataclysmic event. The greenskins grow bored, their bloodthirsty chieftain turns his gaze to the stars, and the galaxy braces for the onslaught of crudely built, yet terrifyingly effective, Ork spaceships.

The inspiration behind the Orks of Warhammer 40,000 can be traced back to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Yet, the Orks of Middle Earth bear little resemblance to their Warhammer counterparts. The latter are savages, delighting in the chaos of war, their green skin a unique trait born in the crucible of Warhammer lore. They are a hodgepodge of cultural influences, their equipment a chaotic mix of stolen, repurposed, or self-crafted weapons and armor. From the German Stahlhelm M35 of World War II to the looted Astartes Power Armor, the Orks’ gear is as diverse and unpredictable as they are.

Within this green tide, subcultures emerge. The Speed Freaks, for instance, echo the reckless abandon of 1% bikers, their language bearing a strong resemblance to the Cockney dialect. And don’t overlook the infamous chequered patterns adorning their armor, a nod to the British chavs.

Despite the Orks’ omnipresent threat, the galaxy teems with other intelligent species that view humanity as a mere obstacle. One such race is the T’au Empire, an intelligent amphibian humanoid species that nearly suffered extinction at humanity’s hands during its early civilization. But, that’s a story for another time.

Join us next time as we continue to explore the grim expanse of Warhammer 40,000, where heresy, demons, and aliens thread an intricate tapestry of eternal war. Until then, keep your bolters loaded and your faith in the Emperor unwavering.
