Horus Heresy: Aftermath for the Space Marine Legions – Part 1

Title: The Blood-Soaked Age: Horus Heresy and the Rise of the Inducti

In the grim darkness of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, blood is the only constant in war. It matters not whether the battlegrounds are littered with gilded sticks or rifles rending atoms asunder. Be it the soil of Terra or the verdant expanses of distant worlds, rivers of blood will flow, voraciously feeding the insatiable appetite of war. This chilling sentiment begins many ancient texts passed down through the ages, surviving even the cataclysmic days of the Horus Heresy.

In this relentless hunt for enemies and the unending thirst for blood, not only were ancient manuscripts lost among the ruins of burning planets and devastated cities, something far more significant was lost. The Golden Age of humanity met its abrupt end with the onset of the Civil War. This war shattered not merely the peace and prosperity on newly discovered worlds but also crushed the very souls of those participating.

Yet, this wasn’t always the case. Long before the onset of the great Crusade, Emperors and their genetic masters labored in the depths of the Imperial Palace. Their objective? To create the perfect soldiers to lead humanity to its destiny amongst the stars. From their labors emerged genetic masterpieces – the Thunder Warriors, superhumans of unmatched martial prowess. Though they were destined to fall in battle on the final day of the unification atop Mount Ararat, their legacy lived on in the 20 Primarchs and the Legions of the Astartes.

The transformation from mortal to legionary was a complex process, requiring surgical augmentation, genetic manipulation, and psycho-conditioning. It was a delicate balance, ensuring the candidate survived while meeting the staffing requirements of unending war. The result? Unwavering soldiers, ready and eager for victory.

Yet, these stages of transformation were severely tested during the Horus Heresy. Despite the grueling conflicts of the Great Crusade, rarely was a legion threatened by losses. But with the onset of the Heresy, brother turned against brother, sister against sister. The most infamous event, the slaughter at Istvan, was but a prelude to the carnage yet to come.

The Warmaster, Horus, in his quest to usurp his father’s throne, ignited a conflict the likes of which the Imperium had never seen. His perfidious servants accomplished what two centuries of war against xenos and rebels could not – they shattered the Imperium and its legions. The losses began to outnumber the recruits, and each legion faced a dilemma. They could either remain true to existing recruitment standards or turn to new methods, no matter the cost.

Enter the Inducti. This term refers to any legionary recruited into the Legiones Astartes after the events of Istvan V and until the fall of the Warmaster. The term’s origin is linked to the planet Bot, a feudal world that swore fealty to the World Eaters Legion. The Inducti were monstrous soldiers, armored to the point of becoming Space Marines, each a nightmarish mockery of the ideals of the Legiones Astartes.

So, in the face of annihilation, the legions adapted, creating warriors from the ashes of war. The Golden Age of humanity may have ended, but from its ruins arose a new breed of soldier, hardened by the horrors of the Horus Heresy and ready to etch their names in the annals of the Imperium’s history.
