In the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium, a tale of defiance, courage, and relentless determination unfolds. In the aftermath of a gruelling battle where a massive moon orbits over the grim world of Terra, a tense confrontation between the stoic Wall chapter masters and the Lord Commander of the Imperial Udin M Udo Burmont unravels. Burmont, a figure of unwavering resolve, openly voices his disdain for the squabbling high lords of Terra and the Lord Commander, a consequence of identifying Elenor Prime as the origin of the formidable Beast and his mighty W.
Our protagonist, Burmont, emerges as a fervent advocate for an Imperial counterstrike to exterminate the Beast and obliterate the Greenskins. Leading his chapter during the invasion of the Beast’s capital world, Gorag Grod, Burmont fights alongside the resurrected Primarch Vulcan. This epic battle showcases Burmont’s unyielding leadership from the front lines, though his frequent insubordination to both Captain Kurand and Vulcan himself becomes a prominent hurdle.
Vulcan, exasperated by Burmont’s constant challenges to his authority, devises a ploy. He proposes a challenge: whoever could lift his massive Thunderhammer, aptly named ‘Doom Tremor’, would rightfully assume the mantle of Lord Commander of the Imperium. This proves to be an impossible feat, as the weapon is so heavy that even an Astartes in Terminator armour struggles to lift it.
A riveting display follows, as Kurand, with the assistance of the Fists Exemplars Chapter Master Maximus Th and his squad, not only lifts the mighty weapon but even launches it like a javelin, demonstrating his willingness to work with others and shun individual glory. Vulcan, impressed by Kurand’s cooperation, declares him the ideal candidate for Lord Commander.
However, the trials and tribulations of our protagonists don’t end there. During the final assault on the Beast’s Temple Gargant, Burmont once again challenges Kurand’s leadership, infuriated by the decision to evacuate and allow Vulcan to face the Beast alone. This brazen disregard enrages Vulcan, who strikes Burmont, leaving him chastised and shamed before his fellow Scions of Dawn.
Yet, despite the humiliation, Burmont retreats with the rest, and the narrative shifts focus to the brave Marshall Marius Amalric. This stalwart warrior plays a pivotal role in the closing days of the 13th Black Crusade before the fall of Cadia and in the Ultramar Campaign, which culminates in the resurrection of the Primarch Roboute Guilliman.
Amalric’s heroics continue as he leads a Black Templar’s Crusade Fleet, known as the Cruxis Crusade, to Cadia in a desperate bid to defend it from the forces of Chaos. Surviving the onslaught and accepting aid from the alien Eldar, Amalric flees to Ultramar, following Guilliman’s resurrection, and arrives with a new Black Templar’s Crusade at Mcragge.
In recognition of his contributions, Amalric is named the Emperor’s Champion by the chapter’s chaplain during a crucial moment of the Terran Crusade. His heroic saga culminates in him striking a decisive blow against the Bloodthirster Skarbrand, stabbing him through the chest with the Black Sword of the Emperor’s Champion.
As the tale continues, we encounter more heroes like Marshall Magnar and Marshall Gervat, each with their own remarkable stories of devotion, heroism, and sacrifice, contributing to the epic narrative of Warhammer 40,000. Stay tuned for more in this multi-part series as we continue to explore the thrilling and often brutal saga of the Imperium’s greatest heroes.
