Imperial Knights and their sworn enemies – Part 7

Title: The Legendary Knights of House Cadmus: A Tradition of Honor and Valor

When the galaxy speaks of unwavering resolve, honor, and justice, the conversation invariably turns to the Knights of House Cadmus. For millennia, these warriors have upheld a celebrated tradition known as ‘the Cull’. An annual event held on Midsummer’s Eve, this ritualistic hunt is more than a mere tradition; it’s a testament to the spirit of competition and survival that defines House Cadmus.

Imagine this: A dense, mutant-infested forest becomes the arena for the knights. Their goal? To control the mutant population of their homeworld, Risa, while competing for the ultimate prize – leadership of House Cadmus. Advanced biorhythm-reading cogitators, affixed to their suits, meticulously track the number of mutants each knight eliminates. The knight with the highest kill tally emerges victorious, assuming command of the house for the forthcoming year.

This unique tradition has led to a vibrant rotation of leadership within the house, setting them apart from other knightly houses. Yet, defying this trend is Baron Roland of Swinford Hall. With an impressive 32-year reign thanks to his consistent triumphs in the Cull, Baron Roland has been the steadfast rock House Cadmus needed in the face of recent challenges.

The devastating onslaught of High Fleet Leviathan on the nearby Forge World of Griffon 4 left House Cadmus significantly weakened. It was in this time of crisis that Baron Roland shifted their allegiance, dedicating House Cadmus directly to the Imperium, rather than the Adeptus Mechanicus.

The tradition of House Cadmus, however, extends beyond the battlefield. There’s a long-standing tradition that delineates the roles of its members based on gender. The men pilot the knights and bear arms, while the women hold key roles in ceremonial and diplomatic spheres. They are the stewards of the house’s valuable items, such as flags and trophies. The knight’s consorts, in particular, hold a position of high esteem, serving as wives to the knights and mothers to future generations.

One cannot talk about House Cadmus’s traditions without mentioning the pre-battle Feast. Dating back to a time before the fall of the High Lord, this ritualistic gathering is meant to bolster spirits and strengthen bonds. On the eve of battle, the knights and their consorts gather at the hearth, sharing food, drink, and camaraderie. Even the after-effects of the feast, such as a sour belly and a hangover, are taken in stride, thanks to bionic enhancements designed to neutralize these effects before combat.

These feasts take place in the house’s fortress, Golem Keep, which overlooks the mutant-infested forests from its lofty plateau. The emblem of House Cadmus, a split mutant’s head, stands as a nod to the Cull and their ongoing battle against the mutant scourge. This symbol, once displayed alongside the Cog Mechanicus, now stands proudly beside the Imperial Aquila, marking their renewed dedication to the Imperium.

Despite the losses and changes they have faced, the Knights of House Cadmus continue to embody the spirit of honor and duty. Their rich history is defined by unique practices, from the fierce competition of the Cull to their pre-battle rituals. Under the steadfast leadership of Baron Roland, they have navigated immense challenges, reaffirmed their allegiance to the Imperium, and continue to protect their world, upholding their legendary heritage.

Stay tuned for the next part of this multi-part series where we delve into the mysterious world of House Morton and their black-armored war machines. We’ll explore their long history on the forboding world of Kimaria, enveloped by the dense and mysterious nebula known as the Black P’ol.
