In the vast expanse of the Milky Way, it’s a rare sight to find a human devoid of even the smallest scar. Yet, humans, with their ephemeral lives, are mere flickers on the grand timeline of existence. What then, of our galaxy, whose lifespan stretches into tens of billions of years? Its history is etched into its celestial body, the cosmic scars of time acting as an autograph of events from eons past. Among these, the Eye of Terror stands out, an ominous vortex spilling etheric energies into reality for countless millennia.
Contrary to popular belief, the genesis of the Eye of Terror can be traced back to the cataclysmic War in Heaven. The ancient race, in possession of technology of unimaginable power, managed to rupture the fabric of reality, creating a tear in the unseen barrier between the material universe and the immaterium. It was the Necrons, with their enigmatic black stone pylons, who were able to mend this tear. These soulless conquerors placed their installations around the breach, causing it to fold inward, and to prevent future breaches, they scattered these pylons across the galaxy.
It wasn’t until the 42nd Millennium that the Imperium of Man began to understand the Necrons’ logic in choosing these specific locations. Scholarly revelations unveiled that the boundary between reality and the warp was particularly thin in areas with dense star clusters. It was these locations where cosmic anomalies like the Eye of Terror, the Maelstrom, or the Maleactor occurred, not as random as previously believed. The emergence of the Great Rift, a cataclysm that split the galaxy, only served to solidify these assumptions.
This newfound knowledge proved instrumental in predicting the actions of the ‘Horned Ones’, a nefarious force seeking to enlarge the Great Rift, severing another segment of the Imperium Sanctus. The loyalist forces were able to thwart this plan, but it came with the bitter realization that Abaddon’s Black Crusades were strategic attacks, aimed at worlds where the pylons might obstruct the appearance of the Great Rift. Had the Imperium deciphered these plans earlier, perhaps the impending tragedy could have been averted.
Unfortunately, the blame for these catastrophic events doesn’t solely rest on the shoulders of humans. The Eldar, with their psychically potent nature and hedonistic lifestyle, played a significant role in causing the Eye of Terror to reopen after eons of dormancy. Their vices, reflected in the warp, began to coalesce into a tumultuous vortex of perverse desires and emotions. This vortex gave birth to Slaanesh, a deity born of the Eldar’s excess lust and vanity, who began to manipulate the minds of its creators, pushing them towards destruction.
The fall of the Eldar culminated in a mass orgy of pleasure, providing Slaanesh with enough power to fully awaken. This marked a dire moment for the ancient race. Slaanesh’s awakening was accompanied by a scream so powerful that it shattered the Necron’s barrier, which had, over millions of years, lost most of its pylons to various cataclysms.
In its place, the Cadia Gate was formed, a sad remnant of the once robust barrier, destined to be the only passage into the merciless storm of the Eye of Terror. This reopened wound in the galaxy’s fabric proceeded to flood the cosmos with unrestrained energies of the Immaterium. Like blood gushing from a severed artery, the warp swiftly consumed the Eldar worlds at the epicenter, marking another grim chapter in the rich tapestry of cosmic history.
