Exploring the Eye of Terror – Part 4

Greetings, Warhammer 40k aficionados! This time, we dive deeper into the treacherous journey of the 17th Legion, the Word Bearers, into the Eye of Terror. As part of our multi-part series, we’ll be focusing on the first Gal Vorbak and the birth of this formidable force, their secret expedition, and the intricate play of power and treachery among the Primarchs.

The Word Bearers, led by the enigmatic Primarch Lorgar, made the first daring penetration into the Eye of Terror. This brave, or perhaps foolhardy, act was no ordinary exploration. Instead, it was a zealous quest to find the gods of chaos, an uncharted path traversed by the Aartis of the 17th Legion through the Cadian Gate, the only known stable passage into the Eye of Terror. This venture was shrouded in secrecy, hidden from the prying eyes of the Imperium, and hence failed to stir up the curiosity of humanity.

The first kernels of knowledge about the mysterious Eye of Terror were gleaned through the valiant warriors of the Shattered Legions. These relentless pursuers were on the tail of The Emperor's Children and Perturabo's Legions, who ventured into the Eye of Terror in search of the mythical weapon, the Angel Exterminatus. The expedition was a high-risk gamble, but Perturabo, the Primarch of the Fourth Legion, was entranced by the call of the gigantic warp storm since his childhood. He decided to undertake this perilous journey, drawn to the boundaries of the anomaly, which he christened as the Eye of Terror.

The expedition's objective lay at the heart of the warp storm, unreachable without the guidance of an elder guide. This guide led them through the calm currents of warp energy, enabling their passage through the storm with minimal losses. Their journey led them to the ancient Eldar planet, Idris, located in the very center of the Eye of Terror. Orbiting a supermassive black hole, Idris defied comprehension, with light, matter, and even time itself vanishing into its impenetrable core.

Despite the eerie and unsettling environment, Perturabo did not falter. He went ahead with the Iron Warriors' strategy, bombarding the landing zone and turning it into a scorched field. His brother, Fulgrim, expressed dissatisfaction with Perturabo's meticulous approach. Still, Perturabo was resolute, and Fulgrim had to concede.

As they ventured deeper into the planet, Perturabo grew suspicious of his brother's sincerity, fueled by the transformation of the Third Legion into a mob of vandals, taking perverse pleasure in destruction. The climax of these emotions was reached in the labyrinth leading to the Temple's Center.

Perturabo, realizing the ruse, confronted Fulgrim, who decided to reveal a part of the truth, the part that served his purpose. This cunning move concealed the main point and compelled Perturabo to comply.

What follows next in this tale of treachery and power play in the Eye of Terror? Stay tuned for the next installment of this gripping series.
