In this next chapter of our multi-part series on the thrilling lore of Warhammer 40,000, we delve into the dramatic saga of Deathbringer, the chosen Lieutenant of the Deathwing, and his pivotal role in the fate of the beloved sanguine son, Sanguinius. Buckle up, fellow lore enthusiasts, it’s time to immerse ourselves in the captivating, grim narrative of Warhammer 40,000.
Our tale picks up at a critical moment. Sanguinius, the radiant angelic Primarch, is teetering on the brink of delivering the final blow to the treacherous Curs. But, as fate would have it, the Lion El’Johnson and his trusted Lieutenant Deathbringer interfere. Teleporting directly into the execution chamber, the Lion pleads with Sanguinius to halt the execution.
Their interruption is not without cause. The Lion reveals that Curs possesses precognitive abilities, a gift that allows him to foresee potential futures – even his own death at the hands of an Emperor-sent assassin. This was the evidence the Lion needed to prove that the Emperor still existed, a truth that resonated with Sanguinius, who also bore the burden of his own precognitive death vision at the hands of the war Master.
The Horus Heresy, the darkest chapter in Mankind’s history, is a brutal backdrop to our story. Brother turned against brother, worlds burned, and the Emperor’s dreams of peace were shattered. Yet, in this chaos, the Blood Angels led by Sanguinius, stood unwavering by the Emperor’s side.
When the Emperor found himself besieged within the Imperial Palace during the Siege of Terra, Sanguinius and his fellow Blood Angels were there, fighting on the front lines. They defended the Imperial Palace against three major assaults, with Sanguinius leading the defense of the outer walls.
During a particularly brutal attack by the Chaos Titans, Sanguinius organized a retreat to the inner palace. At the Eternity Gate, the entrance to the Emperor’s throne room, the Blood Angels held the chaos horde at bay long enough for the wounded to be carried inside.
Finally, the arrival of the Space Wolves, Dark Angels, and Ultramarines Legions forced Horus to gamble on a final battle with the Emperor. Sanguinius, Rogal Dorn of the Imperial Fists, and the Legio Custodes joined the Emperor in a daring teleport assault upon the vessel. However, chaotic sorcery scattered the loyalist Strike Force throughout the vessel.
In the end, Sanguinius died a hero. He was brought before the treacherous Horus, offered a position of power if he renounced his loyalty to the Emperor. Despite his exhaustion and injuries, Sanguinius refused. He was killed, leaving a chilling echo in his sons’ psyches that will never fade. His final act was to create a chink in the War Master’s armor, which the Emperor exploited to defeat Horus.
So, let us remember Sanguinius, not only for his tragic end but for his undying loyalty, his courage, and his sacrifice. His legacy lives on in the Blood Angels, who honor him as the greatest among them. Stay tuned for the next part of our series, where we will further explore the intricate, darkly beautiful tapestry of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
