In the grim darkness of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, there exists an entity of malevolent influence known as the forces of Chaos. This collective power, referred to as the ‘arch enemy’ by the defenders of the Imperium, is a conglomerate of myriad factions and entities united under the ruinous powers of the Chaos Gods – Khorne, Nurgle, Tzeentch, and Slaanesh. The forces of Chaos are also inclusive of those who serve the overarching power of Chaos Undivided.
Among these forces, the most formidable and recognizable are the Chaos Space Marines, the corrupted Astartes, once defenders of the Imperium, now turned renegades and traitors. These are the spearhead of Chaos’s assaults, instilling fear and causing destruction wherever they tread. But they do not stand alone.
Supporting these corrupted Astartes are human Chaos Cultists, fanatical followers who worship the dark gods and act as foot soldiers and agents of subversion. Traitoris Militarum soldiers are defectors from Imperial Guard units, now serving Chaos with their military training and equipment. Traitor Titan Legions, once the colossal war machines of the Emperor, now sow destruction in the name of the ruinous powers.
The forces of Chaos also include Chaos Knights, the fallen nobles piloting towering knight suits in service of their dark patrons. Additionally, the Dark Mechanicum, rogue elements of the Adeptus Mechanicus, embrace forbidden technologies and the worship of Chaos.
Then, there are the otherworldly entities – the legions of Chaos Daemons summoned from the warp to wreak havoc in the material realm. All these forces constitute the vast and terrifying Chaos, each faction bringing unique strengths and horrors to the battlefield.
At the pinnacle of this power structure are the Greater Daemons, immense and terrifying avatars of the Chaos Gods they serve. These entities are living embodiments of their God’s will and essence, executing their Master’s commands with ruthless precision. Greater Daemons often spearhead invasions into the material world, serving as heralds and champions of the ruinous powers.
Summoning a Greater Daemon into real space is a fearful and costly endeavor. It requires an immense amount of psychic energy to pierce the veil between the warp and the material realm. This energy is often procured through a sacrificial rite, where a living being is used as a gateway for the Daemon’s entry – a gruesome price for unleashing such power.
Once a Greater Daemon establishes its presence in the material world, it can weaken the barrier between realities, summoning lesser daemons aligned with its Chaos God. For instance, a Bloodthirster can call forth Bloodletters, the lesser daemons of Khorne, to bolster its forces.
The forces of Chaos represent the ultimate antithesis to the order and stability of the Imperium. Composed of a vast array of corrupted warriors, dark sorcerers, and demonic entities, they are unified under the dark banner of the Chaos Gods. Each faction within Chaos plays a role in the ceaseless war against the Imperium, driven by the unholy ambitions of their Dark Masters.
Unleashing Chaos on the battlefield are also the Demon Princes, former humans who have risen to the ranks of the Chaos God’s most powerful servants. These beings, champions of Chaos, have earned the favor of one of the major ruinous powers. The forces of Chaos are a relentless and ever-present threat to the galaxy, and their story continues in the next part of our series.
