Why Did Necrons Turn Their Worlds into Tombs? – Part 12

The dark, grim world of Warhammer 40,000 offers endless narratives of valour, treachery, and apocalyptic warfare. Today, we delve into the tale of Sovereign, the once-thriving agricultural world that fell prey to the sinister designs of the Dark Mechanicum.

Sovereign was a stepping stone in the vast Imperium, a planet governed by a local schema acting as a temporary Governor. Over time, the society evolved into a feudal structure. Farmers toiled endlessly, unable to attain promotions, while a ruling dynasty held the top post. This was the state of Sovereign in the 41st Millennium.

However, the Dark Mechanicum from the forge world saw an opportunity in Sovereign. They intended to exploit the planet’s resources for the Ruinous Powers. Their machinations were devious; Magos Ferus poisoned the planet’s water reserves with a virus designed to transform the local farmers into berserkers when activated. This vile scheme was put into action when the Death Watch arrived on the planet.

The Ordo Hereticus, initially suspecting slavers as the cause, realised the darker truth too late. In their desperate response, they struck Sovereign with cyclonic torpedoes, triggering an exterminatus that annihilated all loyalists and devastated all production capabilities. The once-fertile fields were the first to suffer.

But did the Dark Mechanicum retreat, seeing their plan go awry? No. They chose to double down. Their interest piqued by traces of Xenos presence, they believed the remnants of an ancient civilization promising technological treasures were hidden on the planet. Their exploration led them to a complex cave system with inscribed walls and intricate security systems. Deep within the planet, they discovered a complex filled with thousands of Necron warriors.

Overwhelmed by the discovery, the Dark Mechanicum decided to study the Necron language in hopes of conquering the complex and using it against the loyalists. However, their intrusion awakened the Tomb World of the Subaca Dynasty. Thousands of scarabs descended upon the Dark Mechanicum, tearing them apart and signaling the awakening of the Tomb World.

Once a blooming paradise, Sovereign had long ceased to be. Its atmosphere, polluted with ash and toxins, hardly let any light reach the surface. The weather was dreadful, with severe storms sweeping across the planet, further polluting the atmosphere. The planet’s restoration would take millions of Tyranid years, but the Necron, indifferent to atmospheric conditions, found the current situation favorable.

Meanwhile, within the Jericho Reach, another tale unfolded on the world named Scapula. Famed for its Magos Biologists and their ability to reanimate dead tissue, Scapula was a world of myth and intrigue. Many Aristocrats sought to extend their lives by using the world’s advanced medical technologies. However, the planet was also riddled with power struggles, deceit, and murder.

This tumultuous existence continued until the 41st Millennium when a massive earthquake heralded a catastrophic event. A chasm four kilometers wide opened, and an object of even larger proportions soared out. By then, it was too late for the Imperium…

Stay tuned for the continuation of this multi-part series, where we delve deeper into the mysteries of the Jericho Reach and the devastating consequences of the Dark Mechanicum’s transgressions. The saga of the 41st Millennium is far from over.
