The Shriven’s Tragedy: How Did Loyalty Turn to Treachery? – Part 8

Title: The Unseen War: Shadows in the Warp (Part 1)

In the cold, black abyss of the warp, a dagger-like ship, as silent and deadly as the night, slipped into existence. The vessel, a spectral silhouette against the backdrop of the void, was a hive of activity. Adepts, the unsung heroes of the Imperium, toiled tirelessly in the ship’s dark corridors, their efforts illuminated only by the flickering light of lumens.

In another part of the ship, four deadly figures prepared for action. One, a solitary figure, meditated, a rifle cradled on his knees like a lover. The second, a mysterious figure with a cursed eye, hid in a shadowy chamber, his eye tightly shut as if to ward off the horrors of the world. The third, a chameleon of a man, endured agonizing anatomical changes, his body morphing under the influence of enhanced polymorphine. The last, a deadly amalgamation of man and machine, twitched in the web of cables, his lethal body restrained by chemical stimulants as strategic information streamed directly into his subconscious.

Their mission: to confirm the presence of the target below. As the successes on the bridge confirmed the target’s existence, the adepts reacted with the unflinching calm of the truly devoted, muttering customary prayers as they activated each member of the punitive squad.

Their plan, already devised and approved by the grim masters of the ship, was clear. The failed assassination attempt on Bston Prime might have tipped their hand, but subtlety was a luxury they could no longer afford. They were in the midst of a protracted conflict, a deadly dance between Heretics and Loyalists, and now, only the mission mattered.

Small landing ships, like streaks of deadly comets, rushed down to the battle raging on the surface of Desa. Death Guard troops landed across the outer defenses of the Fortress. At the forefront marched hordes of plague zombies, their bodies triggering mines and traps with a grotesque disregard for their own lives.

The Plague Marines advanced, escorting demonic engines that rained fire upon The Fortress. Despite heavy fire from mortars and heavy bolters, a significant breach opened in the walls of the first Bastion. The walking dead, in their insatiable hunger for destruction, poured through the gap, only to be swept aside by the fierce psychic fire of Argento Coran.

Inside the Fortress grounds, a warp rift opened, lightning splitting the air as Typhus appeared with his retinue of Terminators. They had come for two things: the ark and the head of Fabius. The opes indicated that both targets were nearby.

Fabius, warned of the new threat, was forced to interrupt his work. His assistants quickly loaded the samples into bios sarcophagi on grav platforms, and then the scientist activated the last batch of altered Warriors. As the monsters began to awaken, shattering the glass of their tubes and rising to their feet, their legs covered in viscous slime, they moved towards their own doom, following the silent command of Fabius.

Meanwhile, high above the battle, the fleet of the Torchbearers hovered. Shield Captain Tyar analyzed the situation and, in a daring move, ordered the fleet to bypass the planet from the shadow side to avoid confrontation with the Death Guard ships.

Transports were released into the atmosphere, flying low over the Plains to avoid detection. They landed away from the battle and struck the Death Guard’s rear with incendiary bombs. The outer bounds of the first Bastion filled with new battles as squads of Custodes and Sisters of Silence attacked the demonic machines and the hordes of walking corpses.

In less than 10 minutes, Typhus’s main armored force was destroyed and the Loyalists moved towards the breach in the wall. Their objective was clear: eliminate the sorcerer Argento Coran, the Enlightener.

As the battle raged, transports hovered over the Bastion. From their ramps, two full squads of Custodes, led by Tyar, descended onto the wall. They had identified Fabius Bile during the battles on Barston Prime and knew it was necessary to eliminate the heretic before he could escape among the stars.

Fabius, having finished packing, prepared to leave the laboratory to proceed to the evacuation point. His servants began to work on stabilizing the plasma reactor that powered the entire complex. After actions taken by his followers, the rapid destruction of the reactor core began. Whoever won the battle for Desa would be buried here within a few minutes.

In the midst of it all, Fabius Bile stepped into the heat of a firefight. Typhus and his Terminators were exchanging furious salvos of fire with the Shield Captain and his Custodes. The war for Desa had only just begun…
