What Drove Konrad Curze to Madness? Unveiling the Night Haunter’s Story – Part 2

In the grim darkness of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, there exist a myriad of characters, each with their own unique and captivating stories. One such character is the Night Haunter, whose early years were painted with grizzly hues of survival and isolation. Nestled in the shadows of partially destroyed buildings, this wild and weary child was lulled to sleep not by sweet melodies but by the haunting screams of dying souls.

In his infancy, Night Haunter was a formidable force, with incredible strength, tirelessness, and a vigilant mind. His dreams, vivid and terrifying, were filled with images of distant worlds aflame, strewn with mutilated bodies. He saw himself fighting on alien planets, the cries of dying soldiers morphing into the screams of the criminals of Nosto upon awakening.

In the constant darkness and silence, the young Primarch was more nightmare than demigod. Relying on murder for survival, he fed on his victims, and when that was not enough, he turned to the flesh of the dead. In this black cauldron of sin, he honed his mind, extracting whispers of thoughts from the flesh he consumed, stealing the art of killing and human speech from his victims. His transhuman mind absorbed all the darkness that could teach him anything, studying everything with a veracity that only a being of his nature was capable of.

As Night Haunter grew, he discovered his uniqueness. The beings he killed were weak, slow, and foolish. He learned the language of Nosto, a grim planet of criminals. The language, filled with silent sounds and gentle metaphors, was a stark contrast to its speakers’ ruthless reality. After Nostromo joined the Imperium, it gained a dark reputation for producing the best poets as well as the best liars.

The result of this terrifying and unique upbringing was a personality too dreadful to be simply called a killer or a monster. Yet, even in this seemingly hopeless beast, the light of the Emperor still warmed. Despite witnessing no positivity or hope in his years on Nostromo, the Primarch held onto a belief that he could change the world for the better. This fierce, self-educated boy, nourished by human flesh and carrion, decided to bring justice to Nosto.

His campaign began with the elimination of street killers and bandits, then escalated to entire criminal groups. Bodies, crucified and mutilated, began appearing on the walls of houses, flayed pieces of skin dangled from bridges, and severed heads grinned from the black balustrades. Thus, the inhabitants of Nosto named him Night Haunter, a name that followed his deeds and instilled equal parts terror and hope.

People saw in Night Haunter an angel of blind justice, a merciless killer for other killers. Yet, there was nothing in his actions that even remotely resembled the protection of their victims. One night, in the darkness of a back alley, Night Haunter intervened in an assault. He destroyed the first perpetrator and allowed the other to flee, not out of mercy but for the thrill of the chase. Yet, he did not help the victim, his focus solely on the pursuit of justice.

This is the saga of Night Haunter, a tale of survival, justice, and darkness. His story is a testament to the grim and complex universe of Warhammer 40,000, where even the most dreadful of characters can possess a glimmer of hope, a desire for a better world.
