The Emperor of Mankind, the almighty figure at the helm of the vast Warhammer 40,000 universe, once stood atop Mount Vengeance on Terra and proclaimed, “There shall be no peace beyond my power, there shall be no enemy beyond my wrath.” This thunderous declaration rang out, inspiring a group of his most loyal servants. They vowed to serve the Emperor in the highest capacity, utilizing their mastery in stealth, deception, and assassination to realize his dreams of galactic conquest.
These loyal servants, anonymous yet deadly, hunted down those who dared to disrupt the Emperor’s divine plan, striking with the force of celestial thunderbolts. Their work was clandestine, executed without any desire for recognition or praise from their Emperor, whom they deemed themselves unworthy of his attention. They operated in the shadows of the great Crusade, quietly traversing from planet to planet, executing traitors and ensuring no one deviated from their sacred oaths.
However, these loyal servants knew they couldn’t cheat death forever. They saw the need for their skills to be passed down to ensure the perpetuation of their duty, and thus, they revealed themselves to the Emperor. The Emperor, recognizing the weighty burden of duty they’d shouldered, was greatly pleased. Majestic temples were erected on Terra to train the next generation in the craft of soul-taking, and thus, the Officio Assassinorum was born.
The names Calidus, Venenum, Culexus, Vindicare, Eversor, and Vanus etched their mark in the annals of history. The strongest apprentices survived incredibly rigorous training and passed their skills onto the next generation. New assassination techniques were studied, and the mastery of blade, pistol, poison, and garrot was honed in all conceivable aspects.
In the governance of an Imperium spanning the entire galaxy, absolute power is required, reinforced by absolute might. Sometimes, this might is displayed in its most primitive form – armies of warriors, war machines, fleets of spacecraft hurled at the enemy. But there are more elegant ways to achieve the desired outcome: coercion, bribery, threats, blackmail, and murder. All these are weapons in the armory of those whose iron grip defines the realms of man.
The Officio Assassinorum, one of the most clandestine services of the Imperium, ranks among these ancient organizations. Its Grandmaster is a member of the High Lords of Terra, a congregation of unimaginably powerful individuals who make decisions affecting the lives of billions across the galaxy. Only these rulers can sanction the dispatch of an agent on a mission, for they fear their weapon might be turned against them.
But the Imperium is not without its flaws and weaknesses. Many planets believe they can break free from the dominion of Terra. It’s common for planets to escape the vigil of the High Lords, and given the crushing grind of Imperial life, many worlds fall into the thrall of heresy. Thus, the Officio Assassinorum serves not only as a tool of destruction but also of diplomacy, a constant reminder of the Emperor’s power and wrath, ensuring that no peace exists beyond His power, and no enemy beyond His wrath.
