The Imperium of Man, in its vastness and complexity, harbors secrets not meant for the ordinary human minds to comprehend. Among these secrets, the lore of the Zenos stands paramount, a knowledge entrusted only to the chosen few under inviolable oaths of secrecy. It is a colossal burden to bear, a test of spirit and sanity that many fail to endure. Yet those that survive become formidable, the epitome of human potential, and join the ranks of their Temple Operatives.
These are no ordinary soldiers, but the Imperium’s Assassins. Trained for a decade, they are physically and mentally shaped by advanced augmentative surgery, the likes of which only the most sophisticated technology of the Imperium can provide. Nodes stitched into their brains heighten cognitive abilities, while submuscular acoustic surgery prepares their bodies for the inevitable brutalities they will face in service to the Imperium.
Such technology is treasured and safeguarded on Holy Terra, away from prying enemy eyes. It is this same technology that allows the Assassins to withstand the effects of polymorphic drugs and reality-shifting devices used by the esoteric temples. But even with the training and the tech, an Assassin’s leash is held tight. Only with direct sanction from the High Lords of Terra, achieved by a two-thirds majority vote, is an Assassin released into the galaxy to fulfil the task they were born for.
The Officio Assassinorum, home to these skilled killers, maintains meticulous records of their exploits. Success is almost guaranteed – instances of failure are rare and far between. Whether the target is man, witch, beast, or demon, an Imperial Assassin is death incarnate.
Two major temples specialize in the art of traceless assassinations – the Vindicare and the Venenum. The latter’s agents are masters of information manipulation, surpassing even the denizens of the Dark City of Commorragh in their knowledge of poisons. They administer slow-acting toxins and vanish, leaving no room for suspicion. The Vindicare, on the other hand, wage complex covert wars, gathering exhaustive intel about the targets and their surroundings to orchestrate deaths that seem like mere accidents or oversights.
The Imperium often employs these stealthy killers when revealing the heresy of high-profile individuals could cause more harm than good. Many revered Saints or celebrated leaders have met untimely ends at the hands of these Assassins, their secret heresies discovered and dealt with quietly and efficiently.
Rumors whisper of a third temple, the Secretum, whose agents guard the Imperium’s darkest secrets. They do not adhere to a specific method of assassination, choosing instead to protect the Imperium by any means necessary.
The Officio Assassinorum and its temples are the Imperium’s deadly scalpel, deployed when the sledgehammer of the Imperium’s armies is too blunt. These masters of death are the pinnacle of human proficiency, unleashed only on the direct sanction of the High Lords of Terra. For an Imperial Assassin, death is not just a job – it’s an art form.
