Title: The Unleashing of the Defilers: A Tale of Chaos from the Eye of Terror
In the grim darkness of the far future, there are tales of war and horror that chill the very marrow of the bravest Astartes. One such tale is that of Abaddon the Despoiler’s relentless quest for new, horrific war machines. His insatiable appetite for destruction led him to the planet Zan 2, nestled deep within the eye of Terror. There, the dark sorcerers of the Mechanicum pledged their loyalty to his cause, their allegiance sealed with the promise of rare artifacts, blood offerings, and menials.
As Abaddon dispatched his dark servants into the material universe to gather these offerings, the renegade Tech-Priests of the Dark Mechanicum labored in their hellish citadels, forging nightmarish creations of war. Among these, the defilers, ancient and terrifying machines of destruction, rose to prominence on the slaughter fields of Abaddon’s first Black Crusade. As the black Legion marched, a multitude of horrific daemonic war machines accompanied them, yet none inspired as much dread as the scuttling defilers.
The unfortunate inhabitants of the planet Earhart can bear testimony to this terror. In the year 781.M3, their world became the staging ground for the full force of the defilers’ monstrous assault. As a chaos fleet blotted out their skies, the Imperial defenders braced for the onslaught. Armored Cadia Chimeras rumbled across the landscape, troops hastily fortifying critical positions, as the Imperial Fists’ fourth and fifth companies made planetfall.
The battle that ensued was an apocalyptic spectacle. Defilers churned through waves of Imperial infantry, their relentless gunfire reducing bunkers and gun placements to rubble. Their bone-shaking roars and the crack of their monstrous weapons echoed across the battlefield, their shells decimating the Imperial reinforcements before they could join the fight.
Each time the forces of the Imperium rallied, the terrifying speed and savage ferocity of the defilers broke their resolve. Like monstrous spiders, they surged forward with an unnatural thunder, tearing open tanks and dispatching dreadnoughts in jaw-dropping clashes. After four solar days of ceaseless battle, the Imperial Fists’ companies managed to repel the chaos forces, forcing a retreat back to their orbiting ships.
The chaos fleet vanished back into the Eye of Terror, but the legend of the defiler had been forged in the crucible of Earhart’s battlefields. Abaddon, ever the despoiler, was so impressed with the defilers’ bloodlust and the sheer carnage they could unleash, he demanded more be constructed within the soul forges. As the traitor manufactoria churned out even more defilers, the demon-engines found their way into various warbands and legions, not just Abaddon’s traitor force.
By the early 32nd Millennium, the defiler had become a mainstay of the forces of the Chaos Space Marines. Used to obliterate Imperial fortifications in lightning-fast raids, these monstrous machines took center stage in some of the most violent conflicts since the Horus Heresy.
Perhaps most notable of these atrocities was the assault on an Imperial fleet in the Segmentum Tempestus by a warband of Word Bearers. Despite having no specific allegiance to Abaddon, they nevertheless routed the fleet, unleashing defilers on each cruiser. The demon-engines ripped through passageways, crushed crew members, and torched those who tried to flee. The defilers left nothing but destruction in their wake, before disembarking to their chaos vessels. The Word Bearers sent the ship spiraling back into the rest of the Imperial Fleet, and the cold void of space filled with explosions.
The Infamy of the defilers continued to spread, their horrific deeds documented over millennia. On the hive world of Nucon 6, the Engine of Plague, a specific defiler, became the catalyst for the Death Guard to spread Nurgle’s putrid diseases. Despite the world’s robust planetary defense force and a Cadian regiment, the Engine of Plague and its cohort of defilers tore apart tanks and gutted soldiers in key positions, gradually grinding down the Imperial forces.
And thus, the legend of the defilers continues to grow, a testament to the relentless terror that the forces of Chaos can unleash. Abaddon’s insatiable thirst for destruction is far from quenched, and the Dark Mechanicum continues to labor in their citadels, churning out more of these monstrous machines of war.
