Welcome, Warhammer 40k enthusiasts, to yet another installment in our multi-part series, where we delve into the thrilling lore of this expansive universe. Today, we shine the spotlight on a particularly captivating event – the bizarre transformation of the World Eater, Khârn, and his subsequent encounter with a captain of the Thousand Sons, Menace Calliston.
The sacred number of Khorne, eight, played an integral role in Khârn’s transformation. It is said that Khârn was killed during a fierce battle by Len, a loyalist hell-bent on stopping Horus’s massacre of the loyal Space Marines on Istvan III, and thwarting the traitorous Primark’s attack on Terra. The World Eater suffered monstrous wounds in a brutal hand-to-hand combat with Len, thrown onto the teeth of a tank’s dozer blade which pierced his chest. But the resilience and favor of Khorne were not to be underestimated, and Khârn returned to life six solar months later.
In the aftermath of the Emperor-sanctioned scouring of Prospero, Menace Calliston, a captain of the Thousand Sons, led a detachment of his battle brothers onto the devastated surface of their home world. Their mission was simple: to search for any signs of survivors or their Primark Magnus the Red. However, they were taken aback to discover much larger forces of the traitorous World Eaters, led by the resurrected Khârn, who had descended on Prospero for their own nefarious reasons.
In the ensuing clash, most of the Thousand Sons detachment was slaughtered, and Calliston, unconscious, was captured by Khârn. His psychic powers severely weakened, Calliston was interrogated by a mysterious figure lurking in the shadows. Initially, Calliston mistook his tormentor for a despised Aartis of the Space Wolves, primarily due to glimpses of the grey-hued power armor. But as he regained his senses, he soon realized that the armor was not grey, but a dingy white, covered in a semi-transparent layer of red-brown dirt.
The tormentor revealed himself to be a Warhound from the 12th Legion, or as they were now known, the World Eaters. Calliston was taken aback by the sight of iron spikes embedded into the flesh of his captor’s head, a clear violation of the Emperor’s decree. These brain implants heightened the aggression of the superhuman killers, turning them into uncontrollable slayers.
Khârn, revealing his identity, produced an iron pendant in the shape of a wolf’s head, known as the Moonwolf. He explained that the World Eaters had descended onto Prospero specifically for this item, once a part of a warrior’s power armor, used by Magnus the Red in a witchcraft ritual to connect with Horus. However, Calliston soon realized that Khârn had another, more personal reason for being on Prospero.
As Khârn’s tormentor, Calliston noticed the World Eater was in agony, seeking solace only in killing. Seizing the opportunity, Calliston subtly used his returning psychic powers to persuade Khârn to reveal his true intentions. The World Eater was on Prospero in search of mystical devices capable of healing his affliction, and Calliston offered to help, claiming he could replicate their functionality and remove the brain implants that were driving Khârn to madness.
Calliston saw that Khârn was lost in a universe of pain, compelled to commit acts of violence by the corruption of the Blood God Korn. He reached out to a shard of Khârn’s old personality, promising to help restore his dwindling humanity. But would his words be enough to bring Khârn back from the brink of madness? Only time would tell.
Keep an eye out for the next installment in this series, where we’ll continue to explore the epic lore of Warhammer 40,000. Until then, keep your dice rolling and your armies marching!
