Jaghatai Khan – Warrior of Chogoris – Part 3

Title: “The Unbowed Son: Jaghatai Khan, Primarch of the Fifth Legion”

In the grand tapestry of Imperial history, no figure has been as enigmatic as Jaghatai Khan, the primarch of the White Scars and one of the Emperor’s twenty sons. The Khan, known to his people as the Kagan, was a paradoxical figure; a warrior who yearned for the thrill of battle and the glory of conquest, yet held an ardent love for his homeworld, Chogoris. His relationship with the Emperor was complex, filled with reverence, bitterness, and a relentless drive for independence.

When the Emperor discovered Jaghatai, he found a son who had already surpassed some of his older siblings in achievements. The records of the Imperium paint a picture of a joyous reunion, with the Khan humbly bending his knee before his father. However, the Khan’s own journals tell a different tale. Accustomed to being the most powerful man on Chogoris and having crushed numerous foes, the decision to serve another was not easy for Jagatai. The necessity of bending the knee was a humiliation, a price he paid for the protection of his planet and the promise of endless battles across the cosmos.

Despite his initial resentment, Jaghatai saw the pragmatism in aligning with the Emperor. He recognized the Emperor’s arrival as an ultimatum similar to those he himself had issued to his enemies: Join or Die. In return for his service, Chogoris remained an untouched world under the protection of the Fifth Legion. This, along with the allure of the Imperium’s advanced weaponry and the prospect of waging war across the galaxy, was enough to sway the Khan.

However, the Khan’s loyalty to the Emperor was not without its trials. He felt that the Emperor played favorites among his sons, a sentiment shared by many of the primarchs. But unlike his brothers, Jagatai did not let this concern him. He saw the Emperor as too secretive, but his desire was not to unravel these secrets. Instead, he sought to fight and gain as much advantage for Chogoris as possible. His focus was not on recognition or acceptance, but on the welfare of his world.

Upon his first visit to Terra, Jaghatai did not mince words. He openly declared to Malcador the Sigillite, the Emperor’s right hand, that the Imperial Truth was a lie. He questioned the need for burning worlds and slaughtering priests if the resulting compliance did not lead to better lives. Malcador assured him that once the galaxy was under the Emperor’s dominion, humanity would be ready to learn the truth about the universe. But to the Khan, this sounded eerily similar to the empty promises of slavers. Such lies, he knew from experience, often sparked rebellion.

Despite these concerns, the Khan was thrust into the Great Crusade at its peak, fighting alongside the mighty xenos kingdoms and the fallen realms of mankind. As the father of the Fifth Legion, he had neither the time to fully integrate into Terra’s culture nor to learn established military doctrines. His successful conquest of Chogoris was seen as sufficient proof of his capabilities, and he was sent on his own expedition.

Many of his brothers, such as Roboute Guilliman and Rogal Dorn, expressed concerns about the Khan’s lack of understanding of the Imperial Truth and accepted rules of conquest. They feared he would not be able to properly subjugate worlds. But the efficiency and speed at which the Fifth Legion brought planets into agreement overshadowed any objections.

The Khan’s early years in service to the Emperor were marked by trials. The Fifth Legion, numbering 880,000 Space Marines, was scattered across the galaxy in small companies. Each had their own rituals and heraldry, and often fought alongside warriors from other Legions. Despite these challenges, Jaghatai Khan remained committed to uniting these disparate groups under the banner of the Fifth Legion and making them resemble the warriors of his native Chogoris. Using a foundation of loyal companions and recruits from his homeworld, he set out to unify his Legion and carry forth the Emperor’s Great Crusade.

Thus began the saga of Jaghatai Khan, the unbowed son of the Emperor, a leader who would carve his own path across the stars, forever bound by duty, yet fiercely independent. An enigma within the Imperium, yet an undeniable force in the grand cosmic theatre of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
