Title: “The White Scars: A Gritty Tale of Power, Persistence, and the Whirlwind of War”
Part of a multi-part series, our focus today shifts to the formidable legion of the White Scars and their famed leader, Jaghatai Khan. We’ll dive deep into their unique strategies, alliances, and the trials they faced during their participation in the Great Crusade.
The White Scars, despite their numerous victories, held an outsider status amongst the other legions in the Great Crusade. Their father, Jaghatai Khan, did little to dispel their reputation of brazen rowdiness and seemingly indiscriminate violence. He was a warrior, uninterested in ceremonies, rules, and the rigidity of primarchs like Gillman or Dawn. Yet, he had a warm place for those who embraced his apparent barbarity. Only Horus, who had an uncanny knack for forging bonds with his brethren, and Sanguinius, who chose to see the virtues in the Emperor’s sons, managed to break through his tough exterior.
Under the leadership of their battle-hawk, the White Scars occasionally fought alongside other forces. Over centuries of the Great Crusade, they stood shoulder to shoulder with the Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Emperor’s Children, and Salamanders. One of their most fateful victories towards the end of the 30th Millennium was achieved with the Death Guard and Luna War Wolves on the planet Drun.
Drun, once a thriving beacon of human civilization, had succumbed to the energy of the Great Ocean, severing its contact with the Imperium. When the three legions descended upon Drun’s capital, they assumed it was occupied by abhorrent xenos. Yet, the Storm Seer of the fifth Legion sensed a breath of death lurking within.
Despite mockery from Primarch Mortarion, the Storm Seer’s eerie prediction came true. Upon breaking the city’s gates, a wave of rotting corpses threatened to overwhelm the legionnaires. A whirlwind of deadly energy unfurled above the city, and a scream echoed from the throats of the dead, chilling the bravest warriors to their core.
The Storm Seers later pronounced that warp portals on high hills were influencing the world’s population and the city was the epicenter of this deadly energy. Mortarion, still clinging to his belief that xenos were to blame, found an unlikely ally in Horus. However, command was entrusted to Jaghatai, who sided with his seers.
The purification of Drun lasted about six standard months. The success of this campaign can largely be credited to the unique battle strategy employed by the White Scars. With the help of the Storm Seers, they learned to anticipate the xenos’ actions. Legionnaires in small, autonomous groups swiftly annihilated them. The Librarians played a crucial role in combat, weakening the energy that bound the corrupted humans to their controllers.
By the time of the final battle, Drun was riddled with warp-powered fissures. The outcome remained unpredictable, but the presence of the Storm Seers among the Space Marines tilted the scales in their favor. Today, we celebrate the audacity, resilience, and strategic brilliance of the White Scars, as they continue to carve their place in the annals of the Imperium’s history.
