History of Ciaphas Cain – Part 4

In the vast, unending universe of Warhammer 40,000, where the eternal war for the soul of the Imperium rages on, intricate tales of power, treachery, and heroism weave an intricate tapestry of lore. Today, we delve into the shadowy corners of this universe, shedding light on a clandestine project entwining the Ordo Xenos and the Adeptus Mechanicus, centered around an ancient artifact known as The Shadow Light.

Predating mankind itself, The Shadow Light harbored immense power. It could stir the latent forces within hidden psykers and amplify the powers of the awakened. A formidable tool, indeed. This artifact was secreted away in the Mechanicus’ sanctum, built into a dam within the demon-infested valley on the Eastern continent of Perlia.

However, the artifact’s fate took a twist when it fell into the hands of a cunning Tech Adept named Methus, under the employ of Inquisitor Kilan of the Ordo Hereticus. Methus snatched it from its sanctuary shortly before the dam’s obliteration, which incidentally resulted in the drowning of an orc horde.

Inquisitor Kilan had a grand plan. He sought to use The Shadow Light to forge an army of psykers potent enough to launch an assault on the Eye of Terror, the home turf of the Chaos forces. To achieve this, he forged alliances with several Chaos Cults on Punda, transforming them into unwitting servants of the Emperor.

The charismatic Commissar Ciaphas Cain, summoned by Inquisitor Veil, entered the scene during Kilan’s machinations. Initially an object of Kilan’s assassination attempts, Cain was later courted as an ally. However, upon discovering Kilan’s ruthless plans – which included using a captive Lictor to lure a Tyranid swarm, causing vast civilian casualties – Cain initiated a shootout. Amidst the ensuing chaos, Jurgen, a psychic blank, seized The Shadow Light.

Kilan, under the mistaken belief that either Cain or the Mechanicus had deactivated the artifact, attempted to wrest it from Jurgen. However, the moment he exited Jurgen’s range, he was mortally struck by the artifact’s full fury. Methus, too, met a grisly end at the hands of a Tyranid during a monastery evacuation.

Following Kilan’s demise, The Shadow Light was returned to the restored dam in the Valley of the Demon Hosts, where it remained for another 60 years. However, its peace was shattered during the second siege of Perlia in 999.M41 by Warmaster Varon the Undefeatable, a servant of Abaddon the Despoiler.

Emerging from retirement, Cain, coordinating with planetary and system defense forces, led a successful counter-offensive against Varon and his Chaos cultists. However, the victory was bittersweet, as a cadre of Necron scouts seized the artifact, presumably to destroy it.

Cain and Veil deduced that the Necrons, who are known for their fear of psychic forces, would likely not use the artifact against the Imperium but would instead hide it from the gaze of Chaos. In the grim darkness of the far future, heroes like Commissar Cain shine as beacons of hope, their deeds forever enshrined in the archives of the Imperium.
