Title: Vulcan’s Fire – The Birth of Salamanders
In a time and space where the clash of titanic forces is a common occurrence, a celestial event unfolded on the far-flung planet of Nocturne. The Primarch Vulcan, along with 3000 newly inducted Space Marines from the native populace, descended upon the world, accompanied by a formidable fleet of warships, combat vehicles, and weapons forged from Vulcan’s own handiwork. Their purpose? To purge the planet of the invading Ork menace that had turned it into a battlefield.
The Legion, led by the mighty Primarch himself, launched a daring offensive against the largest of the space hulks orbiting the planet, the ANTM. Vulcan, leading a team of fearless warriors, infiltrated the Ork ship and planted seismic charges at its core. This audacious act, combined with the unexpected intervention of their genetic father, spurred the Space Marines into an unyielding assault on the xenos. Despite their dwindling ammunition and waning strength, they pressed on, their spirits ignited by the inferno of Vulcan’s indomitable will.
The Orks, caught in the relentless vice of the Space Marines’ offensive, were driven to retreat. Yet, there was no respite for the beleaguered xenos. Vulcan’s sons pursued them relentlessly, their wrath manifesting as a merciless inferno that consumed their foes in its wake.
In the aftermath of their victory, the 18th Legion, comprised of the warriors from Terra and those of Nocturne, met on the desert planet’s coral sands. They removed their helmets, revealing their distinct mutations – a tribute to Nocturne’s high radiation levels and the presence of rare chemical elements in its atmosphere. The inhabitants of Nocturne, regardless of their original ethnic background, developed an onyx skin tone and a unique vision that allowed them to perceive the world in the infrared spectrum.
When the Terran legionnaires beheld Vulcan and his Nocturne-born Space Marines, they recognized their genetic father. Despite their external differences, they understood that the man standing before them had come to save them and take them home. They attempted to kneel in reverence, but Vulcan forbade it. All his sons were equal, and he was not a petty king who demanded blind obedience. Instead, he knelt before his sons, honoring the courage they had shown and the sacrifices they had made.
Vulcan then turned to the fatally wounded Lord Commander Cashen Vaughn, formally handing over the command of the Legion to him and presenting him with the broken power claw that had struck him down. This symbolic act sealed the bond between the two halves of the army, reinforcing their unity and brotherhood.
Following their first full battle, Vulcan began reshaping his Legion, instilling in them values of honor, self-sacrifice, and bravery. The 18th Legion, previously known only by their numerical designation, was dubbed “The Fearless Legion” by the soldiers of the Imperial Army. However, Vulcan bestowed upon them a more fitting name – the Salamanders. The name, inspired by the dangerous lizards of his home planet, held a deeper meaning. Just like the salamanders, the Space Marines would fight fiercest when protecting their own, embodying the ethos of self-sacrifice and bravery.
The Legion’s emblem became the skull of Casari, a formidable lizard defeated by Vulcan in a competition with the Emperor. Vulcan’s armor, draped with the emerald skin of the lizard, could withstand the heaviest of blows, including direct nuclear bombardment. His Warhammer, the Dawnbringer, boasted a built-in teleporter and could only be wielded by Vulcan himself, testament to its tremendous weight.
Vulcan returned with his Legion to Nocturne, where he enhanced their existing strengths and incorporated new ones. His companions built powerful fortresses, arsenals, and manufactories. Modest huts gave way to residential domes, relay stations, and Vox towers. Instead of mere earth magicians and metalworkers, the planet saw the emergence of seismologists and geologists. Vulcan also ensured the protection of his people from possible Dark Eldar attacks by stationing a special Astartes Garrison on the planet.
In Vulcan’s rule, the lives of the people of Nocturne changed for the better. He brought the best of the Imperium to his people, enriching their lives while preserving their unique culture. Vulcan succeeded in merging the ideals of the Emperor with the ancient beliefs of his people, creating a harmonious blend that would serve as the bedrock for the future of the Legion and the Nocturne populace.
This was the birth of the Salamanders, a Legion built on the principles of honor, self-sacrifice, and bravery, forged in the crucibles of war and tempered in the fires of Vulcan’s indomitable spirit. The embers of their origin story continue to burn brightly, a beacon of hope and resilience in the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium.
