Welcome back to our multi-part journey through the epic saga of Warhammer 40,000. Today, we’ll delve into the thrilling tale of Conrad Kur and Vulcan, a tale of fraternal rivalry and sacrifice that is as gripping as it is tragic.
The training cages echoed with the clash of blades and the grunts of exertion. Conrad Kur, known as the Night Haunter, and Vulcan, the Primarch Salamander, were locked in an intense sparring match. The mere suggestion of fear was enough to ignite the Night Haunter’s wrath, causing him to fling his blade aside and lunge at Vulcan in a fit of rage. However, Vulcan, embodying his title as the Lord of Drakes, defeated Conrad Kur with an effortless ease that belied their shared lineage.
The aftermath of the fight saw Vulcan using Kur’s body to shatter the energy shield over Dawnbringer. Despite his victory, Vulcan chose not to kill his brother. This decision was rooted in his belief that the Emperor had imbued his sons with an incredible intellect that was meant to surpass that of mere humans. Vulcan considered Conrad Kur to be the most flawed of the Emperor’s sons but couldn’t bring himself to end his brother’s life.
Swiftly, Vulcan activated the teleporter built into his hammer and found himself in the upper atmosphere of Mcag, the capital of the Kingdom of Ultramar. As he plummeted towards the planet’s surface, his body ignited into a burning inferno. Even as he faced his apparent demise, he rejoiced at the thought of his impending resurrection within the domain of Raboot Gillan.
Conrad Kur, who had managed to escape from the Dark Angel’s flagship, followed Vulcan to Mcra with the intent to finish what he had started. However, he was thwarted by the intervention of the other primarchs. Despite this intervention, Vulcan met his end, struck down by John Grammaticus, an eternal representing the enigmatic Cabal organization. The weapon of choice? The Spear of Fulgurite, a material said to be the only substance capable of irrevocably ending an eternal.
In the wake of Vulcan’s death, the surviving legionnaires of the 18th lost, but still loyal to the Emperor of mankind, found solace in the realm of Raboot Gillan. The Salamanders, convinced of their primarch’s demise, mourned their loss while the Ultramarines conducted a grand funeral ceremony for the Lord of Drakes. Vulcan was laid to rest in a golden tomb, his armor on and his warhammer in his dead hands, the Spear of Fulgurite still lodged in his chest.
In a bid to bring their beloved Lord of Drakes home, the Salamanders sought permission to transfer Vulcan’s body back to his home planet. Despite their grief, they clung to the hope that Vulcan might rise once again. Their journey was fraught with danger, from the Ruinstorm to a fleet of Word Bearers and the Death Guard, and finally, a battle against the forces of the traitors on Nocturn.
In the face of overwhelming odds, the Salamanders were aided by the intervention of the enigmatic Eldar Seer, Eldred Ulan. He opened a new portal to Terra, where they were met by Rogal Dorn. Despite the heavy losses and the palpable grief, the Salamanders still held hope for their fallen leader.
When they finally reached Terra, the Emperor of mankind revealed to Vulcan that he had guided him in the creation of the Odula. The tale ends on this mysterious note, leaving us to ponder the implications and await what comes next in this grand saga. Stay tuned for the next installment as we continue our exploration into the rich lore of Warhammer 40,000.
