The Origins of Chaos – Part 3

The Chaos Gods and Their Followers: A Deep Dive into Warhammer 40,000 Lore

Welcome back, fellow lore enthusiasts, to another installment in our Warhammer 40,000 series. Today, we delve into the captivating world of the Chaos Gods and their followers, a subject as enthralling as it is terrifying.

Picture this: A deity of disease and decay, a force of life that permeates the cosmos, grandfatherly in his affection yet horrific in his guise. This is Nurgle, one of the Chaos Gods who counts both mortals and demons amongst his adherents across the galaxy. Despite his gruesome appearance and the pestilences he spreads, Nurgle and his demon servants are surprisingly affable, treating his followers with paternal care.

These disciples, who affectionately refer to him as Grandfather Nurgle, or Plague Father, embrace his afflictions as divine gifts, the cries of his victims as gratitude. His ‘church’, the Lord of the Flies, welcomes all who grasp the inevitability of death, entropy, and decay, transforming them into Nurgle’s devoted followers.

Enter Slaanesh, the youngest yet almost equally powerful Chaos God. She (or should we say they?) was birthed from a scream that formed a warp rift in the Galaxy, causing the near extermination of the Eldari race. Slaanesh is the deity of lust, debauchery, excess, perfectionism, and hedonism. She can take any form, often represented as a left female and right male figure, both adorned with golden hair and double horns. Her symbol, a conjoined male and female emblem, is commonly concealed by her followers who instead prefer to flaunt erotic jewelry.

Slaanesh’s realm, the Eye of Terror, is a chilling aftermath of her awakening in the warp. It resulted not only in the decimation of the Eldari but also the destruction of their gods, with few exceptions. Her arch-nemesis is Khorne, as their ideals starkly contradict each other.

The potent power of Chaos has eternally swayed the mortal realms. Every deity in the warp, from the mightiest god to the humblest demon, claims followers among the mortal races. During the 31st Millennium, the Emperor’s most trusted son, Horus Lupercal, succumbed to Chaos’s influence, sparking the greatest civil war in the history of the Imperium and adding nine Legions of Astartes to Chaos’s military force.

Among the first to submit to Chaos was the 12th Legion of Astartes, led by their Primarch Angron. They began to worship Khorne, the Blood God, with fervent violence and slaughter. Renamed as the World Eaters, they quickly gained infamy for their melee prowess and gratuitous aggression. Post-betrayal, the World Eaters spawned the Khornate Berserkers, monstrous warriors who lived for battle and bloodshed, their battle cry of “Blood for the Blood God, skulls for the Throne of Skulls” echoing through the cosmos.

These Berserkers, preferring melee weapons like axes, are brutal and ruthless fighters. They carry trophies of war – skulls and skin strips, dried blood-crusted, a testament to their savagery. So fanatical in their devotion, they would not hesitate to attack allies or each other if provoked.

In the grim darkness of the far future, the Chaos Gods continue their cosmic dance, weaving a tale of terror and fascination. We’ve only just scratched the surface, so stay tuned for our next deep dive into the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
