The Origins of Chaos – Part 6

The Chaotic Underbelly of the Imperium: Cultists, Dark Apostles, and the Spread of Chaos

Greetings, enthusiasts of the grim darkness of the far future! Welcome back to our multi-part exploration of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Today, we’ll sink our teeth into the insidious figures that lurk in the shadows of the Imperium, those who pledge their allegiance to the forces of Chaos.

Imagine you’re walking through the bustling streets of an Imperial planet. The people seem ordinary – yet beneath their attire, their skin is etched with symbols, the sight of which would make any devout believer in the Emperor wince with unease. These are the cultists, the hidden minions of Chaos, lying in wait to sow seeds of discord and destruction.

When the forces of Chaos launch an all-out assault, these cultists aren’t left in the dust. Like cockroaches, they scuttle out from their hiding spots, donning makeshift armor and clutching weapons they’ve stashed away in anticipation of upheaval. Their goal? To overthrow the Imperium, to bring about a new order that preys on the hopelessness of the average citizen.

Despite their crude weaponry, which largely consists of cobbled-together machine guns and industrialized flamethrowers, they pose a real threat. They are numerous, spontaneous, and unpredictable – a deadly combination that makes them formidable enemies both for a single planet and the entire Imperium.

Now, let’s shift our gaze to the followers of Chaos Undivided. Fewer in number than the cultists, they are, however, the most devoted servants of the dark gods. Their strength lies in the word, the gospel of Chaos they spread through the ranks of the Warp legions. These are the Dark Apostles, vile parodies of the Emperor’s servants.

The concept of Dark Apostles originated before the Horus Rebellion, when the Emperor issued a decree creating chaplains within the Astartes legions. These faithful followers of the Emperor were to maintain the fighting spirit and morale of their brethren. But after the betrayal of the traitor legions, this role was grotesquely warped into the Dark Apostles.

Each Dark Apostle is an important cog in the grand scheme of the Chaos Gods. They seduce entire cities and regiments of the Astra Militarum with sweet promises of power under the warp. Their most reviled adversaries are the Imperial Church of the God Emperor, and they relish in desecrating the holy places of the Ecclesiarchy.

On the battlefield, a Dark Apostle is a fearsome sight. Clad in blasphemous armor and covered in tattoos that pay homage to the gods of Chaos, they stride across the battlefield, bellowing heretical prayers. Their weapons, too, mock the Emperor’s servants – they wield powerful rods and staffs known as the Dark Codices.

Dark Apostles are not the most skilled warriors or sorcerers, but they wield immense authority among the forces of Chaos. A single word from an Apostle can plunge a planet into civil war. In the aftermath of such victories, grotesque altars are erected, where the victorious cultists are sacrificed en masse in the name of Chaos.

The greatest number of Dark Apostles can be found amongst the Word Bearers Legion, led by Primarch Lorgar, the galaxy’s principal preacher of Chaos. Other traitor legions and gangs vie to lure an Apostle to their side, for it not only earns them the favor of the Chaos Gods, but also a throng of followers and dark priests ready to rush at the enemy at the first signal.

One notable figure amongst the Dark Apostles is Erebus, one of the most powerful captains and the first chaplain of the Word Bearers. He was a key figure in turning Lorgar’s heart away from the Emperor and towards the forces of Chaos. But that, dear readers, is a tale for another time.

So, join us next time as we delve further into the grim darkness of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Until then, keep your faith strong and your bolter loaded!
